Structural Engineering 1 has to be passed in order to take an exam in Structural Engineering 2. Structural Engineering 1 topics are considered as propaedeutic for Structural Engineering 2 arguments.

Objectives

Considering the argument sequence for Architecture Master Degree, the approach of Structural Engineering 2 course cannot be limited to beam (single element) analysis but has to be enlarged considering complex frame structure both in elastic range (Operational and Damage Limit State) and in non linear range (Safety and Collapse Limit State).
In order to considering structural loading conditions the Semi probabilistic Limit State Approach will be considered both for Serviceability and Ultimate State.
Sectional analysis for a r.c. elements are comprehensive of general stress state (longitudinal and tangential stresses) due to axial, shear, bending and torsional actions both in elastic and plastic range.
Due to permit a rational approach to the matter Structural Safety and Material Engineering topics are discussed too while current numerical strategies for structural analysis will be discussed.
Any topic will be defined considering actual Italian Structural Code (D.M. 17.01.2018) in comparison wth previous Italian or European Codes.

Contents

The main goal of the Course, devoted to Architecture Students of the 4th year, is that to permit to be able to design and model conventional structures: in particular reinforced concrete frame structures.
This goal will be reached by means of frontal lections, both theoretical and practical ones, and of an optional complete design of a multistorey 3D r.c. frame.

Methods of Provision

Conventional

Teaching Methods

Mandatory propaedeutics is that of UdA rules, attending is recommended above all if the, facultative, frame design will be carried out during the course and discussed during the final examination.
The Teacher will be at disposal for weekly consulting hours and design revisions; an dedicated scheduling will be defined for special events.
Facultative frame design have to be approved until February 2020, for the same date three multiple choice tests will be carried out in order to obtain an admission to final exam.
During Course period some educational materials will be edited by the Teacher on specific arguments or topics. Educational materials due to Teacher Colleagues could be provided too.
Every material will be published on e.learning official platform; in this platform will be published test results, notices, warming and any other student information.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Eight training credits will be assigned with final examination.
Two different paths can be selected by every student:
Path A: without multistorey frame design
Path B: with multistorey frame design
The intermediate tests will be carried out in order to be admitted to final examination:
I test: structural mechanics topics
II test: structural safety topics and structural code provisions
III test: r.c. structural analysis topics both at Serviceability and Ultimate Limit States
A final test can be carried out considering a simple structure analysis, a design to bending and shear action of an element (beam or column) and code provision discussion.
Results of this complex of test, eventually in accordance with an oral exam, will be weighted in order to obtain final evaluation.
For path A maximum evaluation is 25/30 while for path B maximum evaluation is 30/30 cum laudae.

During the Course a facultative multistorey frame design will be carried out for each student; the multistorery frame will be a traditional (column and beam) r.c. frame, seismic action will be considered, an equivalent static load approach will be permitted. Simple structural details have to complete numerical analysis.
Facultative frame design have to be approved until February 2020.
