The cycle of lessons that make up the TTU program is divided into four modules: A) the origins
of modern urbanism in Europe; B) models of cities proposed between the 19th and 20th centuries; C) the
current Italian urban planning instrumentation; D) some recent themes of urban planning. In detail
the topics of the lessons are as follows:
1st module: the origins of modern urban planning in Europe
The module summarizes the historical path through which, in relation to the dynamics of the
fundamental socio-economic models, the modern city is formed and enters a crisis. In particular they come
analyze the reasons why, to try to govern the complexities of the phenomena that accompany it
development of the city, during the nineteenth century urban planning was formed.
2nd module: models of cities proposed between the 19th and 20th centuries
The module illustrates the proposals and projects that have been differently finalized and variously implemented
interested in the theme of the development of the modern city between the mid-1800s and the mid-1900s. Models
highly innovative projects and for some aspects that are still surprisingly current, that some figures of
reference of modern architecture and urbanism, from Cerdà to Le Corbusier, they have been able to offer to the
scientific debate.
3rd module: Italian urban planning instrumentation
The module illustrates, in their foundations, the "tools" of contemporary Italian urban planning in relation
to the evolution of the social and economic system and of the legislative framework that led to its formation.
In particular, the main urban planning instruments at the planned territorial and urban scale are examined in depth
by current legislation, including through case studies.
4th module: some recent issues of urban planning
The module illustrates some innovative planning methods that are being tested in Italy and more
in general in Europe, in relation to the increased sensitivity towards social issues and
environmental. In particular the contributions of urban planning to the theme of development are deepened
sustainable and safeguarding environmental resources.
Exercise activities
The activities of the Urbanistica_1 course are aimed at getting the student to become familiar with the
main tools of the urban profession. Through a laboratory activity carried out in a separate classroom
in different workshops, students are asked to try out: basic and thematic maps, legends
basic and thematic, inspection techniques, representation techniques, general and thematic analyzes,
implementing technical regulations, general and sector legislation, local urban planning instruments,
urban planning parameters and indexes, sizing and calculations, themed research on the Internet, use of ICT
in urban planning.
In workshop_1, the various components of the fabric are investigated through assigned methodologies
urban: the types of buildings related to residential use and their way of aggregating to form fabrics
urban areas, production facilities, leisure facilities, network infrastructures. In this first workshop the
professor analyzes salient examples of each type and students must practice in the research of all
possible variants using search engines such as Google earth, Google maps or Live search. After work

of research, the selected materials must be appropriately paginated and then commented
collected in a book in A3 horizontal format that will be subject to mid-term evaluation.
In the workshop 2, the students are challenged with design issues on the field of study
assigned, simulating a state exam test with the design of an urban lot and the calculation of one
series of urban parameters.
The workshops are led in the classroom by the professor who with the help of the tutors reviews the weekly
progress of student work.
In the workshops the professor weekly introduces the ex cathedra topics and provides the students with the
tools to perform the inspections (physical or virtual) and to produce the graphic elaborations required in the
course of the week. Students work independently during the week and bring materials
products to the professor for weekly verification. The constant presence in the classroom of the professor and the tutor
guarantees to students any clarification or suggestion on the work to be done. At the end of each
workshop students deliver the products produced in an A3 format book during a review
public. The professor attributes to the books delivered an evaluation that contributes, through media
weighted, to the definition of the final vote.
