The course intends to offer the basic elements to understand historically the linguistic realities of Arabic in the framewhork of the Semitic language family, an overview of the linguistic thought of Arabic grammatical schools and its intellectual relevance, and an outline paleography and epigraphy of the Arabian peninsula. A sketch of the question of diglossia and Arabic dialectoligy will also be discussed.
