Objectives

The course aims to develope language competence to comprehend and produce text in English for Sociology according to the syllabus of the degree course in Social Research, Security Policies and Criminality
Therefore, the curriculum, based on the parameter of Common European Framework for Foreign Languages (Strasbourg 1998) will give the student the possibility to learn:
 Communicative competence - level B2 * –
 Micro-language of Sociology
 Economic and cultural aspects of the Angle - Saxon world through realia (authentic material) of the economic field necessary to practice:
 The four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing)

*Of course it will depend on the score the student gets at the exam, that may be A1 A2 B1 B1plus

Contents

The present degree course in Sociology and Criminology prescribes 6 ETC and is organized into both frontal lecturers and practice.
A1 plus of the Common European Framework (CEFR) is the starting level required, being B1 plus the final level to gain.
Therefore the program is based on the review of. English language functions, grammar structures as well as to the introduction of the main lexical and structural elements of the English language for Sociology-
As a matter of fact, finally the students will have an oral exam to check their fluency and accuracy in speaking English for Sociology

Extended Syllabus

The course aims to provide participants with the basic knowledge necessary for the analysis of a realia in English for Sociology
The whole English language structures and functions will be reviewed. Therefore all the 38 units of the grammar course book - S. Perez, M. Solly, Communicative Grammar and Practice, Il Capitello,- will be explained and practiced.

In order to code a text the learner have to decode many of them, so the course will give the students all the necessary tools to do that, such as how to have a factual text analysis on report with economic topics
To satisfy that aim the students are given the following materials:
file 1 Destinations: Writing for academic Success – from page 2 to page 34 from page 212 to page 219

As regards English for special purposes, students are required to learn English for Sociology through specific and authentic readings of the subject with activities on prefixes and suffixes, phrasal verbs, compound nouns, acronyms, as well as through grammar, spelling and pronunciation differences between British English and American English.
Particular attention will be given to the use of the passive form, the abolition of the relative clause in favour of the sentence construction on the left of the key word, typical of technical and scientific English.

The source of the sociological texts are realia. The same passages, with proper activities are introduced through the following course book : Doretta Ardu ,‎ Raffaella Beolè, Life reflections. English for human science, edizione Edisco
A number of texts based on sociological contents – choose during the course – will be given through slides and photocopies.

In sum the programme will be based on:

The course will be organized into face to face lecturers and practice
The course programme will be divided into two modules as follows:

MODULE 1 – 1 ECT (European University Credit) deals with:

 Language functions
 Vocabulary

MODULE 2 - 2 ECT – deals with :
 Decode/comprehend realia of Sociology
 Practice a Factual Text Analysis
 Write a summary and/or a short report
Presentation using micro language of Sociology
