MEDITERRANEAN LIVING
Soul of Places
the area of 1000 square meters is an opportunity to address the development of the design idea in relation to the natural topography of the place in order to establish an intimate relationship between the characteristics of the surrounding landscape and the type-morphological articulation of the building .
General characteristics of the site Climate Zone: Central Mediterranean sub-arid climate (max. Temperature 35 ° min. Temperature 5 °) Soil: Tufa rock characterized by high workability (to be used as a building element once prepared in irregular bricks and / or bricks ) Predominant winds: summer, sirocco and libeccio (se / so); north and north winter (n-e / n-o) Precipitation: almost zero in summer, few in winter (to be foreseen the possibility of collecting it in cisterns for home use)
House of man: It falls within the project site and will be characterized by a level obtained by excavation within the ground and by an above-ground level. Any elevated structures will only be conceivable to make the terrace practicable (pergola, roof terrace, etc.)
Project site // Total area 300 sq m
distributed as follows:
above ground level: 200 m2 // of which 120 m2 covered and 80 m2 outdoors
underground level: 120 m2
House of Man // Spaces
The house is an indispensable artificial microcosm, capable of containing and protecting men and things: we therefore regard it as a nucleus of aggregate spaces whose morphological characteristics differ according to the activities that take place in them, the latter are identified on the basis of five basic human needs. Secondly, the connection path between the designed spaces will be conceived, including it within the aggregate core.
Both the load-bearing structure and any curtain walls and the few furnishings provided will be made only through the use of native materials that are already present on the island (stone, tuff, wood, earth, straw, etc.).
1 - Workspace
Work as the key element of existence finds its home in this dedicated space. The characteristics of the same will depend on the kind of activity that will be hypothesized, in any case this will have to fall within the category of traditional crafts related to the production of artisan products or agricultural culture (carpenter, smelter, glazier, farmer, etc. ). Depending on these qualifications, the Practice space can be both covered and open.
2 - Space for Rest
The most intimate space of the house, probably the most protected and remote, can be placed on the floor obtained by excavation and could take advantage of the position of the winds to encourage its cooling in hot (more frequent) periods. The possibility of providing it with a small spa area and direct visual contact with the landscape can also be considered, for the benefit of its creator.
3- Space of Sharing and Nourishment
A classroom, a space with a single covered span, an exterior / interior, the hearth from which heat radiates on colder nights, food, ritual, ceremonial. They are all suggestions that connect to the space that we define as sharing and nurturing, here the individual marries the collective, the exterior with the interior, it is obviously a space with strong symbolic values.
4 - Space of Contemplation
Man and nature are like two lovers who weave a silent dialogue full of implications, this is the space that welcomes and supports him: a stellar to admire the stars on the night of San Lorenzo or a small vaulted room open at the top, many can be the solutions to be adopted and as many suggestions to refer to when designing the space dedicated to contemplation
Serving spaces and spaces served
Recalling Luis I Kahn we will define the "spaces of man" also as "served spaces" the design and composition in this perspective take the form of a system of relationships between these and the "serving spaces" or the internal and external paths seen as structuring elements of the artifact.
Primary building elements
Support plane (ground connection), Load-bearing structure (structural technology), Living material (construction material), Score profiles (drawing of elevations), Roof (connection to the sky)
