Prerequisites:

The course in "General and Inorganic Chemistry" can be attended without any previous knowledge of chemistry, though it is useful if the student already attended one year courses of chemistry in high school. Furthermore, it is important that the students know basic mathematical elements, in particular they should know how to represent and deal with exponential numbers, logarithms, solutions of first and second degree equations, systems of equations and they should know fundamental elements of physics, such as: kinetic and potential energy, work, Coulomb's law, electric charge, electric dipole.

Objectives

The course of general and Inorganic Chemistry intends to provide the basic concepts of chemistry for the student to face the subseuqnt courses with a chemical background,

At the end of teh course the student should:
- know the baisc chemical notions on composition, structure, properties and transformation of matter
- have the basic knowledge on atomic structure, the nature of the chemical bonding and molecular structure
- have the basic knowlwdge of properties of gases and solutions
. know how to balance a chemical reaction and solve stoichiometry problems
- know how to oevaluate concentration and dilution of aqueous solutions

• Introduction: Physical States of Matter, Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Systems. Chemical Substances and Elements.
• Atomic Structure of Matter: the law of mass conservation and Dalton’s Atomic Theory. Atomic properties. Nuclear Structure and Isotopes. Atomic weights. Chemical Symbols and their quantitative meaning.
• Names and formulas of chemical compounds: Molecular and ionic compounds.
• Chemical Reactions: writing and balancing chemical equations. Calculations involving chemical formulas and equations. Avogadro’s number, the mole concept. Determination of chemical formulas, Stoichiometry.
• Gas Phase: Gas pressure and its measurement. The gas laws and their experimental foundation. The ideal gas law. Gas mixtures and partial pressure. The kinetic-molecular theory. Molecular speed distribution, diffusion and effusion.
• Thermochemistry: Energy and its units. Heat and work. Enthalpy and heats of reaction. Thermochemical equations. Hess’s law

Mixtures of totally miscible liquids: liquid-vapor equilibrium. Colligative properties: boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, osmotic pressure.
• Chemical Kinetics: Reaction Rates, Factors that influence reaction rate, The rate law. Collision Theory and Transition State Theory. Arrhenius equativo. Catalysis.
• Reactions and chemical equilibria: equilibrium state. Chemical equilibrium. Equilibrium constant. Heterogeneous equilibria. Reaction conditions and the equilibrium state: Le Chatelier’s principle. Effect of temperature on the equilibrium state: van’t Hoff equation.
• Acid-base equilibria: Acid and base definitions according to Arrhenius, Brønsted-Lowry and Lewis. Molecular structure and acid strength. Autoionization of water. Solution of strong acids or strong bases. The pH scale. Ionization equilibria of a weak acid or a weak base. Hydrolysis. Buffer solutions. Acid-base titrations. Acid-base indicators.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists of a written and of an oral test. The written exam is made of a multiple choice test of 16 exercises, both questions and numerical stoichiometry exercises, meant to evaluate the comprehension of the fundamental principles of chemistry and the ability of teh student to aplly them to real cases. In order to pass the exam the written part must be approved with 18/30 points. The oral part is an oral discussion of 30 min. ca.
The final mark will be the result of the overall evaluation of both the written and the oral parts.
