Requirements.
To the whole understanding of the disciplines is required: knowledge of histology, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology. To have passed the exam of Physiological and Biomedical Sciences.

Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The teaching of General Pathology contributes to the realization of specific training objectives of the Study Programme in Health Assistance (from the REGULATION "The students will have to obtain an adequate preparation in the basic disciplines in order to know and understand the most relevant elements of the physiological and pathological processes inherent to their professional intervention; be equipped with the essential theoretical knowledge deriving from the basic sciences in the perspective of their subsequent professional application.”

The achievement of the professional training objectives is achieved through a didactic, theoretical and practical path, including the cultural and behavioral knowledge bases on the following topics:

- the ethical and historical dimensions of the health assistant;

- biological and environmental phenomena, with particular reference to humans and ecosystems;
- morphology and physiology of the human organism and of the other main forms of life;
- pathophysiology of the effects induced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors to human health.

At the end of the course the student will be able to knowledge and understanding, to the different levels of complexity (molecules, cells, tissues, organism), the etiopathogenetic factors underlying the structural and functional alterations found in the pathological processes, as well as the damage response mechanisms and the related disorders.
•Applying knowledge and understanding

The student must also be able to apply the knowledge derived from the course, integrated with those deriving from previous courses, to the understanding of the pathophysiology of the main human pathologies.

The student will be able to deal with the clinical problem in a rational way both in the diagnostic-therapeutic approach and in the preventive one.

Contents

Knowledge of physical, chemical, biological and genetic causes responsible for the occurrence of human diseases.

Knowledge of the fundamental cellular and molecular pathogenesis mechanisms of diseases: genetic alterations, mechanisms of inflammation, degeneration processes, changes in cell proliferation.

Knowledge of the pathophysiological and molecular alterations responsible of functional modifications of organs and systems.

Extended Syllabus

Concept of illness and morbid status. Etiology and pathogenesis. Intrinsic and extrinsic causes of disease. Physical, chemical and viral agents as a cause of illness.
• Inflammation: definition and general characteristics. Acute flogosis: chemical mediators and cells involved; the formation of the exudate; various types of exudate. Phagocytosis. Chronic flogosis.
• Thermoregulation. Thermogenesis and heat-dispersion. Non-febrile hyperthermia and hypothermia. Fever: etiopathogenesis of fever; the course of the fever; types of fever; metabolic alterations in fever.
• Pathophysiology of the blood. Anaemia: general processes and classification.
• Oncology: concepts of hyperplasia, hypertrophy, metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia, neoplasia. Benign and malignant tumours. Histogenetic classification of benign and malignant human tumours. Metastasis. The process of carcinogenesis. Concepts of carcinogenicity from chemical, physical and viral agents. Stages of carcinogenesis: initiation, promotion and progression. Oncogenes and oncosuppressors and their role in tumours.

-Teaching material provided by the teacher with express recommendation to the students to use it only as an aid/guide to the preparation of the exam. It is recalled, in fact, that the use of the recommended General Pathology books (exclusive choice of the student) is essential for a correct, useful and easier preparation of the subject.
Students are required to perform all the topics indicated in the program even if not included in the teaching material.
Finally, students are warned against the use of photocopies of educational material (presumed printouts of the lessons) ABUSIVELY sold at the copy shops.

Teaching Methods

The theoretical knowledge will be acquired through the attendance (in total 8 hours) to lessons (traditional and interactive), closely integrated with the study of texts adopted, handouts and material provided by teachers, whose lessons are complementary and absolutely not substitutive.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The assessment method consists of a oral exam.

The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths, the exam is passed if the evaluation is equal or superior to eighteen/thirty (18/30).

In determining the order in which the students are to be examined, the specific needs of working students will be specifically considered.

The assessment of insufficiency is not accompanied by a vote.
Praise may be granted unanimously, if the final grade is thirty.

The publicity of the exams is assured and the communication of the final result of the test and its evaluation are published.

The final mark of the module will derive from the mathematical average of the written test and the oral exam.
To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30.
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in a logical and coherent way.
