Prerequisites:

Knowledge acquired from the frequency/examination of the following courses: “Introduzione alla Geologia”, “Riconoscimento rocce”, “Sicurezza in Montagna”, “Paleontologia” and “Geologia”.

Objectives

The field work is a fundamental part of the learning of Earth Sciences, allowing you to apply in reality the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course of Geology.
The field work, both group and individual, will develop:
a) the methods for the recognition, description and analysis of brittle and ductile complex geological structures, at the scale of the outcrop and their classification in the context of geological and tectonic regional scale
b) 3D vision of the geological structures and rocky bodies and their representation in 2D (geological Map)
c) the relationship between the lithotechnical-structural features and the geomorphology;
d) collaboration and discussion among colleagues;
d) collaboration and discussion among colleagues, developing critical thinking and beginning to distinguish between observations and assumptions, testing the various hypotheses on the field;
e) a logistics strategy for solving geological problems and cartographic through the choice of routes suitable and safe.

Contents

Practical application in the field of theoretical and laboratory knowledge acquired during the Course of Geology. These activities include the geological and structural mapping of a sample area through observation, description and recognition in the field of lithological and brittle and ductile structural elements, and their subsequent classification in the regional tectonic and geological context.

Extended Syllabus

Litho- bio-stratigraphic aspects

Recognition and description of the outcropping lithologies by the physical characteristics of the rocks: composition, color, grain size, texture, sedimentary structures, geometry and thickness of the layers, unconformity, paleontological content (with the help of the lens);
-development of stratigraphic logs;
- Geo-lithological MAP of the visited outcrops and extrapolation of the geological boundaries through geometric structural methods.

Structural Aspects
1) Recognition and measurement with the compass of planar and linear structural elements at the mesoscopic scale (layer bedding, fault planes, fractures, cleavage, kinematic indicators, hinge lines and axial surfaces of mesoscopic folds etc..).
2) a description of the structural associations in the rocks through geological and structural diagrams and sections.
3) Stereographic projections of the measured structural elements and their relationships with the paleostress field.
4) Synthesis on the geometric, kinematic and timing of the observed deformations and their classification in the context of regional geological and tectonic evolution.
5) Execution of geological cross sections with the appropriate orientation and drafting a structural-geological legend.

Teaching Methods

Practical lessons on the field and indoors. Individual work and in small groups under the guidance of the teachers.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Methods of verifying will be integrated into a single examination of “GEOLOGIA and ATTIVITÀ FORMATIVE DI CAMPO DI GEOLOGIA II” (see syllabus of the GEOLOGY course).
In particular, the verification of the part about “ATTIVITÀ FORMATIVE DI CAMPO DI GEOLOGIA II” will be in the final ORAL EXAM where the candidate will discuss the works produced as a result of individual and group activity in the field consisting of:
a) *Illustrative report on the practical and theoretical aspects of the course;
b) Graphic drawings attached: 1) Geological-structural map, scale 1: 10.000, with relative legend and location of the stops made; 2) Execution of 2 geological sections, scale 1: 10,000; 3) Stereographic projections of the various measured planar and linear structural elements.
* ATTENTION: The Report and the Graphic Drawings must be prepared according to the details indicated in the course material available on-line on the e-learning platform.

Besides clothing suitable for field work (protection in case of rain or sudden cold, hat and sunscreen for the sun, medications of regular use and emergency, phone) are required: hammer, compass, lens (10x or 20x ), field notebook, graph paper sheets and sheets of glossy paper A4 size drawing, diagram for the stereographic projections, pencil, pens, permanent marker, colour pencils, 1 or 2 rulers, tape measure, protractor, camera. If available, too: binoculars, altimeter, GPS.
