PART 1
KNOWLEDGE:
The course is aimed to create a knowledge framework of renewable energies in civil buildings. The course will also offer the knowledge about the assessment of renewable potentials and the methods for a design of the analyzed systems.
SKILLS:
The student should acquire the ability to design both wind, PV, solar and geothermal power plants.
PART 2
Starting from the principals of Structural Design that the students acquired during the first level degree and from those of Technical Physics acquired in the Module 1 of this course (“Renewable Resources for Building”), the present teaching module aims to provide the students with advanced knowledge on the structural design of nearly Zero Energy Buildings (hence the acronym nZEB) with particular reference to the materials and construction systems most suitable for guaranteeing the energy performance required by the current legislation, as well as the analysis, verification and safety assessment of these buildings with respect to ordinary and non-ordinary actions.
The specific educational objectives of the course can be summarized in the following points:
- Characterize the education of students with advanced knowledge and analysis tools that will allow them to independently tackle the structural design of nZEB buildings;
- Develop an integrated and holistic understanding of the project;
- Encourage the mastery of the technical terminology of the subject;
- Develop skills besides knowledge through practical activities.
At the end of the course, the student will have an in-depth knowledge related to:
- the physical, thermal and mechanical characteristics of the main building materials used in the design of nZEB buildings;
- the technologies and functional layers for the energy-saving building envelope;
- the main Italian and European directives and technical regulations on the design of nZEB buildings;
- the criteria and methods for the design, calculation and verification of the load-bearing system of nZEB buildings made of solid or laminated timber.
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- conceive the structural design of an nZEB building at different scales (material and structure);
- dimension, model, analyse and verify timber structures made up of one-dimensional or planar elements, subject to normal or exceptional actions;
- read and interpret the reference legislation and directives concerning the design of nZEB buildings;
- get autonomously updated on the covered topics.
