HISTORY OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES (ICAR / 18)

The course is based on the knowledge of the history of architecture regarding the formal and aesthetic aspects in the different periods, in direct relationship with the techniques, materials, types and static principles of the past. The material explores the historical evolution of the methods and construction elements of traditional architecture, also providing an outline of the contemporary building process.
The teaching of the History of Techniques aims to provide, through the study of treatises and specific techniques as well as through the direct analysis of some architectural works in their formal and constructive complexity, the means necessary to deepen the reality of the project and the realization of the building.

Md1 THE ARCHITECTURAL VOCABULARY
1st SEMINAR - Analysis of the specific terms of the technical construction language specific to historical architecture, elements:
• technical, construction and structural;
• formal and typological;
• compositional, geometric and proportional;
• decorative and linguistic.
Md2. SUMMARY OF THE HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF ARCHITECTURE
2nd SEMINAR - Study of the main periods of the history of architecture over time:
- Greek, Roman, early Christian and Byzantine architecture;
- Medieval architecture: Romanesque and Gothic;
- Renaissance and Baroque architecture;
- 19th century architecture: new materials;
- Contemporary architecture.
Md3. TRADITION AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE IN HISTORICAL BUILDING
3rd SEMINAR - Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli; settlement and typologies, vertical and horizontal structures:
Storico historical-constructive analysis of the architectural elements;
- types of settlement and types;
- stone and brick masonry;
- columns and pillars;
- roofing systems: vaults and floors, ribs;
- openings: arches, architraves and platbands;
- vertical connections.
Md4. CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE IN THE HISTORICAL BUILDING OF THE 20TH CENTURY
4th SEMINAR - Fascism: architecture, cities, buildings, construction techniques and materials: The two constituting disciplines of the course are articulated in these seminars with the elaboration of a final project.
