Within the more general framework of the educational objectives of the CDS, the course aims to provide the knowledge necessary to understand that the optimization and improvement of the current business model and the creation of a new business model are two fundamentally different challenges that must however be dealt with simultaneously. In this sense, performance management, or the set of factors that determine the success of the implementation of the existing business model, could represent an obstacle to the development of a new business model. In fact, the creation of value over time requires that at the same time the management is aware of the importance of:
Improving the existing: emphasizing accountability, favoring maximum efficiency of the business model, stimulating linear innovations to enhance it, setting objectives aimed at reducing performance gaps and designing measurement systems capable of rapidly monitoring exceptions and critical issues, fostering a culture optimization, speed of implementation, economy, keeping the focus on the needs of current customers, aligning individual objectives with strategic ones through rewards and incentives;
Promote the birth of the new: stimulating learning and awareness of weak signals, promoting the culture of experimentation and the continuous verification of new hypotheses in order to reduce as much as possible the uncertainties and risks related to new markets and new products, promoting culture error tolerance, diversity of ideas, measuring progress with indicators that reveal the quality and pace of learning. avoiding economic and financial performance indicators. Precisely due to the existence of these different objectives, and the inevitable tensions generated by them, the design and especially the use of performance management systems are of particular importance, representing at the same time the strength and weakness of the facing the challenges of continuous change. The course pursues the general objective of the course of study to provide knowledge and skills regarding the conditions that make the process of creating value in companies sustainable over time.
The general objectives of the course are:
1) Recognize the tensions between accountability and learning that make performance a complex and multidimensional concept.
2) Distinguish the needs of control from those of surveillance in order to make the optimization and innovation process sustainable over time.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must possess knowledge and skills relating to the design and use of performance management systems aimed at creating value over time.
To this end, the course proposes to transmit the following skills e
knowledge:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
1) Recognize the inevitable tension between accountability and learning
2) Recognize the role played by performance measurement tools in the more general process of continuous improvement in the short and long term.
3) Distinguish the different management styles in relation to the improvement processes and those of innovation and change.
CRITICAL SKILLS
1) Interpret and evaluate management styles with respect to theirs
ability to manage tensions.
2) Identify the conditions of harmonization of the different tensions.
ABILITY TO LEARN
1) Acquire in a conscious way the know-how referable to logics and
performance management techniques.
