Objectives

The course provides the basic tools for topographic investigations with a special focus on Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (module I). Moreover, at the end of the course the students should be able:
- know the sources and tools for the reconstruction of the early medieval settlement structures
- to understand and recognise the dynamics of the rural landscape between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, with particular reference to the relationship between settlements and exploitation of resources
- to carry out completely independent research on the historical reconstruction of the settlement network in the post-classical period from material data and production aspects (module II).

Contents

The course is composed of two modules: the first module will tackle the problems and methods of the topographic investigation aimed at reconstructing Late Antique and Medieval historical landscapes. The second module will be dedicated to the analysis of the he analysis of the territorial system of production in the post-classical period (context, resource provisioning, technological-productive aspects, economic structure, etc.), investigating the relationship between the heritage of the ancient settlement tradition, geo-environmental and territorial characteristics, economic systems and new cultural models.
In addition to presenting the general characteristics of this phenomenon during the course will be carried out in-depth on specific areas, through the use of traditional sources for topographical research and new systems of analysis and reading of the territory.
