Objectives

The Course, consistently with the learning objectives of the MA programme in Philology, Linguistics, and Literary Traditions, aims to:
1) broaden the students’ philological and literary knowledge;
2) foster the students’ critical skills;
3) develop communication skills through seminar activities.
In particular the aims of the Course are:
1) the acquisition of good knowledge of:
a) the distinctive features of the didactic epic genre;
b) the diffusion of astronomical themes in Latin literature;
c) the structure and contents of Arato's work;
d) the linguistic characteristics of the Ciceronian translation with particular reference to sidereal onomastics;
e) the characteristics of the Ciceronian hexameter;
4) the acquisition of further competences in the Latin language;
5) the consolidation of textual criticism competences.

Cicero's Aratea

Extended Syllabus

- Formal characteristics of the didactic epic;
- The didactic epic in Rome;
- Astronomical themes in Latin literature;
- Structure and content of Arato's poem;
- Cicero's Aratea: linguistic characteristics with particular reference to sidereal onomastics; the poetic language of Cicero; the Ciceronian hexameter
- Reading, translation and commentary of Cicero's Aratea

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of in 1) a written 2) and an oral exam.
1) The written exam consists of the translation from Latin into Italian of a piece by a Latin author. The correctness of the translation and the quality of the written expression will be evaluated. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
To sit for the oral exam students must first pass the written exam (pass mark: 18/30). The oral exam will be evaluated from 0 to 6. The final grade results from the sum of the two parts.
2) The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
