Objectives

The aim of this module is to teach:
- the concepts of Natural hazard and risk
- the methods to evaluate the landslide hazard
- the methods to assess slope stability
- the criteria by law to place a dam in Italian territory
- the concept of aquifer and its exploitation for drinkable water
- identification and analysis of the hydraulic risk elements connected to natural phenomena
- approach to the design of works aimed at mitigating hydraulic risk
- identification of the risk associated with water distribution works in urban areas
- elements of digital transformation to support the design of hydraulic works

Contents

The integrated course aims at providing the key concepts of risk, danger and vulnerability of the built environment with reference to hydrogeological phenomena as well as the methodological tools for the design and management of defense works.
The two modules of the course are structured to provide complementary insights on the various issues relating to the analysis of the hydrogeological risk associated with both natural phenomena and the use of water resources.
The course involves the use of professional software and the presentation of the elements useful for the digital transition in the management of hydrogeological risk.

Hydrogeological Risk modulus
Hazard and Risk concepts and methods to assess Natural hazards and risks related to landslides.
Mitigation of landslide risk.
Case study from hydrogeological disasters from Italian History.
Hints of urban planning tools for Natural hazard management.
Numerical methods for slope stability assessment.
Statistical methods applied to landslide hazard assessment.
Natural risks related to the dam location and construction. Dam code in Italy.
Aquifer
Principals of hydraulic circulation. Characterization of aquifers for drinking water exploitation.

Design of Hydraulic Structures modulus
- Elements of hydrology: elaboration of rainfall measurements, depth-duration-frequancy curves, project hyetograms; hydrological losses, flood hydrological models, elaboration of flow measurements.
- Elements of hydraulics of pressurized currents.
- Elements of hydraulics of mono and bi-dimensional free surface currents: tracing of current profiles in stationary conditions; hydraulic jump; current over a rise and fall of bottom; current through a narrowing. Tracing of current profiles using hydraulic calculation software.
- Inflow-outflow transformation processes and reconstruction of flood hydrograms. Hydrological and hydraulic modeling using technical calculation software.
- Flood defense works. Types and construction criteria.
- Dams: reservoir capacity and management. Structural types: wall dams, dams of loose materials; sizing criteria. Water filtration; securing. Ancillary works.
- Water supply. Urban water distribution networks. Hydraulic models for management of water distribution networks. Elements of analysis and management of water losses in urban aqueducts. Vulnerability of urban water distribution networks.
- Digital transformation: data harvesting networks, data transmission and remote control, smart metering.
- Elements of data-modeling to support the project and management of hydraulic works.

Teaching Methods

The module consists of theoretical and practical lessons.
Digital presentations, on-line databases, and calculation sheets will be used.
The exercises will involve the use of calculation codes and software.

The final exam consists of:
a written test and an oral one for the Hydrogeological Risk modulus
an written exercise and an oral exam for Design of Hydraulic Structures modulus.
