Basic notions of geology, structural geology and geophysics.

Objectives

The course aims to provide to the students the fundamental knowledge to investigate the subsurface through 2D, 3D and 4D integrated modeling techniques using geological (e.g. geometrical models, borehole data, etc) and geophysical data (e.g. seismic data, petrophysical models, gravity and magnetic anomalies) at several modeling scales.

Contents

This course deals with the main techniques to integrate and model geological and geophysical data for the multi-scale investigation of geologic, gedynamic or explorative targets.

Extended Syllabus

The course deals with the following tasks:
- basic notions about the main geophysical perspection methods (seismic methods, borehole data, gravity and magnetic anomalies)
- data mining about target areas at several scales and for several geological features of interest
- data handling and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the collected geological and geophysical data in GIS
- data integration and 2D and 3D model construction
- 2D, 3D and 4D forward and inverse modeling to investigate the geological and/or geophysical feature of interest.

Within the course we will use the main analysis and modeling softwares for geological and geophysical data.

Verification of learning:

Learning of the concepts discussed during the lessons will be evaluated with an oral exam after the course is completed. The exam will involve only the themes discussed in the lessons. The questions that will be asked will address the entire program and deal with the most important concepts discussed during lessons and eventual exercises.
