Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of developmental and educational psychology, as well as social psychology.

Objectives

The course aims to provide male and female students with specific knowledge relating to risk and protective factors in relation to psychosocial and developmental aspects, to the construction of the self and to developmental risks (e.g., internalizing and externalizing behaviors), as well as providing the skills diagnostics to analyze the social world of the adolescent.
At the end of the course, students will be able to identify and analyze the clinical and evolutionary aspects of the typical and atypical development of adolescents, managing to grasp the risk and protective factors underlying the different growth outcomes.
Students will be able to diagnose, prevent and manage youth distress in all its forms, also knowing psychological and educational intervention strategies and the tools to be used in these paths.

Contents

Adolescence will be analysed starting from the developmental tasks of this phase of the life cycle (e.g., the development of identity, the emotional-relational development linked to relational contexts (i.e., family, school and peers), as well as analysing the relationship between adolescents and society. The risk and protective factors related to the atypical development of adolescence, such as crime and bullying, will also be explored, with particular attention to assessment techniques and intervention strategies.

Extended Syllabus

The course explores in deep:
The development tasks of the adolescent in relation to the contexts in which he/she is inserted.
The recent and classic theoretical models in the study of adolescence and the aetiology of self, in relation to the social-cultural contexts.
Analysis of risk and protective factors.
Trajectories of atypical development in adolescence (i.e., criminal and violent behaviors in adolescence, bullying, internalizing and externalizing disorders, suicidal risk).
The evaluation and monitoring strategies of the typical and atypical development of the adolescent, and of the main figures with whom he/she is related.

64 hours of lectures and practical activities. Student’s active participation to classes is highly recommended. Supplementary material for class and self-evaluation will be provided.

Verification of learning:

The interview will be on the entire program of the course, in order to verify the knowledge of the topics covered by the lectures and of the texts adopted. The oral exam will be passed demonstrating, beyond the skills mentioned above, sufficient ability to define and discuss the exam topics in a correct and organic form and using a specific language appropriate for the discipline.
