Objectives

Providing knowledge and tools needed by those who want to approach the work of bibliographic management and cataloguing of historical collections, encouraging the development of specific professionalising skills especially in the field of early printed material. The cataloguing of early printed and modern material will be the focus of a dedicated workshop in the second year.

Contents

The first part of the course will explore the history of the book from the invention of movable type printing, in the second half of the 15th century, to contemporary publishing. The focus of the second part of the course will be on material features of early printed material, as resulting from printing processes, as well as on the appropriate terminology, and national and international standards currently in use for bibliographic description.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the support of computer and multimedia/internet resources. Some classes will have a hands-on approach and may be held in historical libraries for a ‘book in hand’ study of the course content; external speakers may be invited for specific classes and seminars.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

An oral exam will ascertain knowledge and understanding of the topics presented in the classes and covered by the textbooks indicated for preparation. The test is intended to verify the knowledge and critical ability to elaborate the theoretical-practical contents of the discipline. The final assessment will also take into consideration the clarity and coherence of the exposition and the level of mastery in the use of technical language.
