The premises that led to the establishment of the Master's Degree Course LM-61 in Food Science and Health at the G. D'Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara, with its cultural and professional aspects, can be traced back to the increasingly evident and shared scientific knowledge that establish significant correlations between food quality, health and well-being. The comprehension of these interrelations prefigures, first of all, innovative, multidisciplinary cultural approaches, which allow "supply chain" research and teaching to be done from the agricultural production and transformation sector, often also controlling the environmental variable, up to the food product with the evaluation of multiple effects on nutrition and medicine. This strategic approach, fundamentally aimed at sharing both multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral programming both as research and as teaching, was the basis of an evaluation of resources and interest both within the University and outside the geographical area of reference. With regard to the first point, the organizing Committee having identified as useful the synergies between professors from different departments, in some cases even historically proven and positive between similar scientific areas (technological and pharmaceutical, nutrition, health) it was possible to grasp the considerable potential for the project establishing a Master's Degree course with these contents, which in any case represent a natural outlet for Dietetics graduates, who need to complete the three-year course with specialized training. Always in accordance with the requirement of training, but outside the area in which D'Annunzio exists, it should be noted that no Degree Course in Class LM 61 is active in the regions bordering the middle-upper Adriatic - Marche, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Friuli - practically north of the Abruzzo region; this circumstance makes it possible to foresee the attraction for three-year graduates with skills in different bio-technological areas, as indicated by the knowledge required for the entrance. Ultimately, we want to form a marked specialization in the fields of nutrition and disease prevention, especially in particular areas such as pediatrics, sports and geriatrics.Regarding the socio-economic and social context in the Abruzzo Region and in neighboring regions (mainly Molise, Marche and Northern Puglia) the Agri-food supply chains represent an important and leading production sector, widespread throughout the territory, and from consultation it was found that there was special interest for professional figures of this type, with new professional opportunities in production and control, in marketing, in catering and for product characterization above all in the health-conscious sense of Mediterranean traditional foods, alongside specific skills that can be used in Institutions and / or territorial public bodies.
