Prerequisites:

In order to access this class, students need to have oral and written comprehension and production skills corresponding to Level B1 of CEFR for Spanish. In order to sit the exam for this class, students must have passed the 2nd year exam in Spanish Language and Translation.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students will:
- have acquired the reading and aural comprehension skills, as well as the writing and speaking skills covered by the coursebook
- be able to write an argumentative text
- have acquired metalinguistic awareness and knowledge about Spanish for Special Purposes and the notion of genre
- have become a proficient communicator in the specialised contexts relevant for the aims of the Course (tourism, academic and medical communication)
- have become aware of the challenges posed by translation at the linguistic, textual, cultural and stylistic level
- have acquired basic documentation skills for medical translation
- have acquired fundamental theoretical notions related to linguistic and cultural mediation.
- have consolidated mediation skills between Spanish and Italian in medical settings.

Contents

The class is split into 3 parts:

- Spanish Language/Linguistics (4 credits): Acquisition of level B2 of CEFR with a special focus on the production of argumentative texts; Introduction to Spanish for Specific Purposes; Spanish for Tourism; Academic Spanish

- Translation (3 credits): Spanish into Italian translation of patient information leaflets

- Mediation (6 credits): theory of linguistic and cultural mediation; practical sessions of mediation in a medical setting.

Extended Syllabus

Language (instructor's module): Spanish for Special Purposes
The module focuses on the analysis of specialized languages in Spanish. Special emphasis is placed on the notion of genre and on the linguistic and cultural makeup of academic and tourism texts. Text analysis sessions will be complemented by a review of Spanish morphology and syntax, as well as practical sessions aimed at furthering students' reading/listening and writing/speaking skills.
Main topics covered include:
1. Specialized languages: definitions and analytical notions
2. Genre in specialized communication
3. Introduction to academic Spanish
4. Academic Spanish: Research articles
5. Academic Spanish: Citation practices
6. Academic Spanish: Linguistic devices for impersonalization
7. Academic Spanish: Hedging in academic writing
8. Academic Spanish: Cohesion: discourse markers.
9. Introduction to tourism communication and persuasive (linguistic) strategies
10. Spanish for tourism: Tourist brochure

Translation:
The module provides an introduction to the translation of pragmatic texts, with a special focus on patient information leaflets. Special attention will be given to the use of documentation tools and techniques for translation.

Mediation:
This module provides an introduction to the theory and practice of oral mediation between Spanish and Italian. The focus will be on the role of the linguistic mediator in different cultural and social settings, analyzing:
1) Theoretical and methodological aspects, including memorization techniques, formal language, medical language, the interpreter/mediator’s code of ethics;
2) Practical aspects: practical sessions will rely on improvisation and role playing (formal and informal interviews), while also tackling linguistic issues (at the phonetic, syntactic, and lexical level).
The skills needed to act as a mediator will be progressively identified and practiced, with a special focus on the medical and healthcare sectors.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).

The classes offered by the instructor(s) are both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).

The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.

For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Assessment for this module consists of a written and an oral exam.
The written exam consists of:
1) Grammar and reading comprehension test (based on the contents of the coursebook and the lector’s sessions): successful completion of this test is a pre-requisite for accessing the other parts of the written exam.
2) Written composition (argumentative text)
3) Questions and exercises on Spanish for Special Purposes (textual and linguistic analysis of parts of a research article with special focus on citation practices, linguistic strategies for impersonalization and hedging, passive voice, discourse markers; writing and analyzing a brief composition describing the contents of a table using linguistic devices typical of academic writing; writing and analyzing a tourist brochure focusing on persuasive strategies.).
4) Translation: brief Spanish into Italian translation (approx. 200 words) of patient information leaflets.

The oral exam consists of:
1) Oral comprehension and paraphrasing / reformulation exercises based on the contents of the Mediation module
2) Conversation aimed at testing speaking and oral interaction skills. The conversation will focus on the readings chosen by the student among those recommended by the instructor during the course. It will also aim to test the oral skills covered in the coursebook.

Evaluation of the class is expressed with a mark out of 30, resulting from the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in each of the parts of the exam.

SYLLABUS VALIDITY
The syllabus is valid for the whole 2019/2020 academic year (until the exam session of January/February 2021). For the final grade to be officially registered, students must have successfully completed all the parts of the exam by the last session of the 2019-2020 academic year.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS AND BEGINNERS
The syllabus is the same for all students, whether attending or not: non-attending students will autonomously revise and practice the contents and the oral and written skills included in the coursebook, possibly integrating it with the additional recommended reference material.
