Objectives

Students will develop metalinguistic awareness on the phonetics, phonology and morphology of Standard British and American English, along with their dimensions of language variation especially concerning Estuary English, Cockney, Multicultural London English. They will also develop reading comprehension skills and practice of sight translation into English and Italian. The Linguistic Centre Lettorato will run classes aimed at a B1 level of language proficiency, in writing and in speech, both in production and in reception. The assessment of a B1 level is essential to the overall assessment of the course.

Contents

The course aims at introducing the fundamentals of English phonetics and phonology as well as morphology, analysing contemporary language variation. Exercises and follow-up activities will include reading comprehension activities and sight translation of texts in the target language and culture (English into Italian and vice versa).The Lettorato classes (run by Alessandria Paciocco, Angela Williams) are an integral part of the course, aimed at developing and assessing a B1 level of language proficiency, which is essential to the overall evaluation of the course.

Extended Syllabus

English Language: Fundamentals of phonetics/phonology, morphology and sight translation (Laura Diamanti)
The module will introduce Students to the principles of English phonetics and morphology, and focus on Standard British and American English, as well as on different dimensions of language variation, with regard to Estuary English, Cockney, and MLE. The use of language and word formation will be taken into account in terms of main features of RP and GenAm. Students will be also introduced to sight translation, through reading comprehension activities and sight translation of selected texts in the target language and culture (English into Italian). Linguistic Centre Lettorato (Alessandria Paciocco, Angela Williams): B1 level The assessment of a B1.1 level of language proficiency is an integral part of the overall evaluation of the course.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, exercises and follow-up activities. The B1 language proficiency lettorato classes will be an integral part of the course.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Written exam on English phonetics, phonology and morphology, along with the Lettorato written assessment on General English, prior to the oral exam. Written exam on phonetic and morphological principles, analysing English language in relation to contemporary language variation. Oral exam on the contents of the course, including sight translation. The written assessment by the Linguistic Centre Lettori (Alessandria Paciocco, Angela Williams) is aimed at assessing a B1 level of language proficiency, and is an integral part of the overall course evaluation.
