Prerequisites:

In order to access this class, students need to have oral and written comprehension and production skills corresponding to Level B1 of CEFR for Spanish. In order to sit the exam for this class, students must have passed the 2nd year exam in Spanish Language and Translation.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students will:
- have acquired the reading and aural comprehension skills, as well as the writing and speaking skills covered by the course book
- have acquired metalinguistic awareness and knowledge about Spanish for Special Purposes and the notion of genre
- have become a proficient communicator in the specialized contexts relevant for the aims of the Course (journalism, academic and medical communication)
- be able to translate patient information texts from Spanish into Italian
- have become aware of the challenges posed by translation at the linguistic, textual, cultural and stylistic level
- have acquired basic documentation skills for medical translation

MEDIATION module:
- have acquired the basic theoretical notions of linguistic-cultural mediation;
- have acquired the basic skills for the recognition and management of the main linguistic variants of Peninsular and Hispano-American Spanish and the related cultural differences in the context of mediation.
- have consolidated the skills in mediation between Spanish and Italian in the audiovisual and cinematographic fields.

Contents

The class is split into 3 parts:

- Spanish Language/Linguistics (4 credits): Acquisition of level B2 of CEFR; Introduction to Spanish for Specific Purposes; Spanish for Journalism; Academic Spanish

- Translation (3 credits): Spanish into Italian translation and Italian into Spanish will deal with a number of text typologies.

- Mediation (6 credits):
theoretical concepts related to linguistic and cultural mediation;
in-depth study of the linguistic-cultural variants of Peninsular and Hispano-American Spanish in the context of mediation;
linguistic and cultural mediation in the audiovisual and cinematographic fields.

Extended Syllabus

Language: Spanish for Special Purposes
The module focuses on the analysis of specialized languages in Spanish. Special emphasis is placed on the notion of genre and on the linguistic and cultural makeup of academic and media texts. Text analysis sessions will be complemented by a review of Spanish morphology and syntax, as well as practical sessions aimed at furthering students' reading/listening and writing/speaking skills.
Main topics covered include:
1. Specialized languages: definitions and analytical notions
2. Genre in specialized communication
3. Introduction to academic Spanish
4. Academic Spanish: Research articles
5. Academic Spanish: Citation practices
6. Academic Spanish: Linguistic devices for impersonalization
7. Academic Spanish: Cohesion: discourse markers.
8. Introduction to tourism communication and persuasive (linguistic) strategies
9. Spanish for comunication: the news
10. Spanish for advertising: the advertisement

Translation:
The module provides an introduction to the translation of pragmatic texts,and on patient information leaflets. Special attention will be given to the use of documentation tools and techniques for translation.

Mediation:
The module focuses on the theory and practice of mediation between the Spanish language and the Italian language with particular reference to the audiovisual and cinematographic fields.
The profession of linguistic mediator in various cultural and social contexts will be presented in its many aspects in order to deepen the specific sector. The module will proceed along two lines:

1) Theoretical and methodological aspects:
the role of the mediator in the audiovisual and cinematographic field, the memorization activity, the use of registers, sectoral language,
the linguistic-cultural variants of Peninsular and Hispano-American Spanish.

2) Practical aspects:
mediation in contexts relating to the field of film production and distribution, audiovisual adaptation, management and communication activities during film festivals and the film forum as a resource for cultural mediation.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).

The classes offered by the instructor(s) are both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).

The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.
For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.

MEDIATION module:
the course is of a practical nature and provides for the active participation of students. The lectures related to the theoretical part (general notions on mediation, linguistic insights of a contrastive type and on the variants of Spanish) will be followed by simulation activities, improvisation, role play (interviews, interviews, presentations, presentations) and exercises on audiovisual materials relating to mediation in the cinema sector.

WRITTEN TEST

LANGUAGE and TRANSLATION module
-Syntactic analysis of at least two sentences in Spanish
-Translation from Italian to Spanish and from Spanish to Italian of two passages on the topics covered in the lesson

Module MEDIATION
-The WRITTEN part, included in the test covering all the modules, is aimed at probing the basic knowledge in relation to the theoretical references of linguistic-cultural mediation, contained in the materials made available to the teacher during the course.

MEDIATION MODULE
The oral exam is oriented to verify the practical skills through a simulation test linked to the various contexts of the audiovisual, including references to some of the main linguistic-cultural variants of peninsular and Hispanic-American Spanish.

-Attendance at CEL exercises is strongly recommended for attaining the levels of language proficiency set out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and for passing the final language exam.
-Before entering the exam with the teacher, students will take the B2 level examination according to the procedures and times established by the University Language Centre. During the examination the teacher will take into account the result obtained in formulating the final evaluation.
-All the information on the schedules of the exercises, the methods of verification and the receptions of the Readers/CEL are available on the website of the University Language Centre.

SYLLABUS VALIDITY
The syllabus is valid for the whole 2020/2021 academic year (until the exam session of January/February 2022). For the final grade to be officially registered, students must have successfully completed all the parts of the exam by the last session of the 2020-2021 academic year.
