It is a requirement of this EPG that students have previous basic knowledge in the following disciplinary areas: general psychology, developmental psychology, and Statistics/Psychometrics.

Objectives

The EPG contributes to realise the learning objectives of the first cycle degree course in Psychological Science and Techniques, providing students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in the Specific Learning Disorders area. Particular attention is given to test-based assessment methods in developmental Dyslexia.
Upon completion of this EPG, students should be able to:
-Describe the main neuropsychological models on developmental Dyslexia;
- Describe methods of early identification of reading difficulties and disorders in developmental age;
- Describe the structure and characteristics of the MT reading test by Cornoldi et al.
- Master routes of administration and scoring of the MT reading test;
- Interpret results of a test-based assessment implemented through an objective MT reading test on a subject of school age;
- Analyse the clinical profile of subjects in developmental age that undergo MT reading tests.

Contents

In this EPG we will explore characteristics and structure of an instrument used in clinical practice to diagnose developmental Dyslexia: the MT reading test by Cornoldi et al.
Specifically, we will focus on routes of administration, scoring, and changes and interpretation of scores, also via practice, simulations, and presentation of clinical cases.

● Introduction to Specific Learning Disorders: definitions, classification criteria.
● Cognitive processes involved in reading: neuropsychological and developmental models.
● Clinical characteristics of developmental Dyslexia
● Description of the structure of the MT reading test by Cornoldi at al.
● Practice of scoring, changes, and interpretation of scores of the MT reading test by Cornoldi at al.
● Simulations
● Clinical cases presentation.

Recommended Bibliography

When lectures begin, students attending classes will be provided access to the course’s bibliographic references on their e-learning platforms. These references include the lecturer’s volumes and slides based on the topics discussed in class.

To gain familiarity and knowledge with the course topics, students not attending classes must read and analyse two scientific papers on evaluation and management of developmental Dyslexia. These are:

Teaching Methods

The course will be held through interactive methods aimed at stimulating student engagement. There will be a total of 16 hours, distributed as follows:
● five hours face-to-face lectures (theory)
● six hours practice on administration and scoring methods of the MT reading test;
● two hours simulation (group work on administration and scoring);
● two hours of real-life clinical cases presentation, accompanied by guided discussion;
● one hour for the final test.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Students attending classes will pass the course if they attend at least 3/5 of lectures (attendance is registered via signature list collection during class) and pass the final exam, which is scheduled for the last day of class. The exam will be in written form. It will require students to calculate and interpret the score of an MT reading test administered to a primary school student.
Students NOT attending classes will pass the course if they pass an oral exam focused on the two scientific papers on diagnostic evaluation and didactic management of developmental Dyslexia (see recommended readings). Exam assessment will be based on the following: knowledge of fundamental notions; ability to discursively organise knowledge; ability to argument critically; exposition quality (competence in using specialized lexicon, efficacy, consistency).
