The course will introduce the concepts of general anesthesia, airway management, and pre-procedure patient evaluation. For outpatient sedation, nitrous oxide will be explained. The mechanism of local anesthetics and the various types of local anesthetic explained. The first aid manoeuvres, airways patency and the recognition of the main emergencies in the chair will then be illustrated: cardiac and respiratory crises, convulsive crises and anaphylaxis. Bacterial endocarditis and the evolution of prophylaxis over time after the 2008 NHS guidelines for dental care will also be addressed.
