Prerequisites:

The course is aimed at students who have acquired, both written and oral, a knowledge of the grammatical, morphosyntactic and lexical and communicative structures of the French language at level B2 +. Passing the French Language and Translation I exam is a prerequisite for passing the French Language and Translation II exam.

Objectives

In line with the educational objectives of the Study Courses in Foreign Languages for Business and International Cooperation and Languages, Literatures and Modern Cultures, the course aims to examine the most recent developments in the theoretical and practical debate on translation and to acquire linguistic competence at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide theoretical-methodological tools useful for the profession of translator in the various fields of legal and literary specialties, from and into the French language.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: knowledge and application of the main translation approaches applied to the various text types. The aim of the course will be to consolidate and deepen written language skills from a professionalizing and autonomous point of view. Knowledge of the professional requisites required by the UNI ISO 17100 standard.

ABILITIES
TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: analyze translations based on text type and different linguistic registers; ability to identify and correct the most common types of errors in translation practice (the “universals” of translation), through peer review and cooperative learning.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: critically reflect on the different translation approaches and on the regulatory mechanisms that regulate standard and non-standard language.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: to be able to describe the main translation approaches and apply them to the different text types being analyzed, to consolidate the skills of comprehension, production and oral interaction. The student must be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired.

Contents

The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objective of
the Master's Degree course "Modern Languages, Literatures and
Cultures" and "Foreign Languages for Business and International
Cooperation" providing students with theoretical and practical tools for
the written translation, editing and revision of contemporary literary
products, with particular reference to the production of novels, short
stories, screenplays belonging to the "noir" constellation "(LM37) and the
sworn translation of the legal-legal specialist language, also through the
use of the most common CAT (Computer Assisted Translation)
applications (LM38).
Through the fundamental contribution of the lessons provided by the
CELs, the achievement of level C1 of the Common European Framework
of Competences is expected, with expansion and mastery of lexicon,
specific terminology, syntax, linguistic registers, idiomatic expressions
and specialty phraseologisms.

Extended Syllabus

The course is divided into 4 modules:
1) Introductory module: the main translation theories; direct and oblique translation, the stages of the translation process, the solutions of direct and oblique translation. Translation pragmatics, attention to the public, the context, the adaptation of the text.

2) Module 1 LM37: literary translation, techniques and tools. The "Polar" genre. History of the polar, its subgenres, evolution, linguistic and sociolinguistic particularities. The argot.. Translation workshops in cooperative learning and peer to peer evaluation.

3) Module 2 LM38: general aspects of specialty languages; semiology of legal language; the types of texts, the hierarchy of sources and their specific languages; the translation of specialized languages. Didactics of legal translation, evaluation of a translation: Translation workshops in cooperative learning and peer to peer evaluation.

4) Module 3 The figure of the translator: professional requirements, the UNI ISO 17100 standard, certified translation.

5) Module 4 Automatic translation and computer aided translation, databases, translation memories: assisted translation atelier, the creation of repertories, databases, the legal phraseological dictionary; acronyms and acronyms.

During the oral exam, students must be able to translate an excerpt from the chosen novel, giving reasons for the choices made.

During the lessons, students of the Master Degree in Foreign Languages for Business and International Cooperation will be provided with a selection of juridical / legal texts (judgments, decrees, administrative and notarial deeds, articles in the specialized press). The same texts will be available to non-attending students at the copy shop.

Recommended dictionaries and online tools:
The availability of free online resources does not make the use of paper dictionaries obsolete, the integration of these tools seems to be the best choice for the creation of in-depth and stable skills in the student / translator. Please note that only tFrench monolingual dictionaries are allowed for the written exam.

Teaching Methods

Teaching is provided through lectures with the use of paper and multimedia material. The different theories of translation will be discussed, deepened and compared, from the most classical to the most current approaches.
The theoretical introduction will be accompanied in each lesson by practical activities (translation atelier) with exercises aimed at developing the skills of decoding, understanding, translation of real texts, with particular reference to the Italian and French-speaking judicial-legal context and / or literary passages referable to the universe of the "polar".
These activities will be carried out according to the teaching methodology of tutoring and peer to peer, in order to:
1. Create a community that promotes the development and innovation of teaching.
2. Promote among students the practice of comparison and involvement in study and research activities
3. Improve the role and the relationship between student and teacher to generate learning.
4. Create a system to promote constructive peer feedback regarding teaching.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

In order to demonstrate learning, the student must pass a written exam and an oral exam:
Written exam: dictation and two translations of passages of different types: (legal or literary), from and into French - evaluation out of thirty)
Only the monolingual dictionary is allowed for the two translations.

Oral exam evaluation out of thirty:
The oral exam is aimed at assessing the linguistic level and translation skills of the specialty, with particular reference to the awareness of the choices made. The subject of the interview will be:
-reflections on translation theory.
- knowledge of the literary genre or specialty language
- knowledge of the main tools of assisted translation and of the professional characteristics of the professional translator (LM38)
-translation competences.
