Students will be encouraged in the metalinguistic awareness on the phonetics, phonology and morphology of Standard British and American English, along with their dimensions of language variation. They will also develop reading and listening comprehension skills and practice of sight translation into English and Italian. The Linguistic Centre Lettorato will run classes aimed at a B1 level of language proficiency, in writing and in speech, both in production and in reception. The assessment of a B1 level is essential to the overall assessment of the course.
The course aims at introducing the fundamentals of English phonetics and phonology as well as morphology, through the analysis of contemporary language variation, observation, and reflection from a sociolinguistic perspective. Exercises and follow-up activities will include English in Use, reading comprehension activities, listening activities, in particular, Ted Talks run by an American media organization that posts talks online for free distribution under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". It will be encouraged the scrutiny of idioms, collocations and phrasal verbs emphasizing their use and, in the meantime, personal reflections on Teds will be promoted. The Lettorato classes are an integral part of the course, aimed at developing communicative competence and assessing a B1 level of language proficiency, which is essential to the overall evaluation of the course.

Written exam on English phonetics, phonology, and morphology, along with the Lectureship written assessment on General English, prior to the oral exam. Written exam on phonetic and morphological principles, analysing English language in relation to contemporary language variation. Oral exam on the contents of the course, The written assessment by the Linguistic Centre Lecturers" is aimed at assessing a B1 level of language proficiency and is an integral part of the overall course evaluation.
