The course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical concepts on the design of building systems and sub-systems. The objectives are defined in accordance with emerging goals concerning technological aspects of the building. A specific focus will be directed on the sustainability of the construction. The critical evaluation of building technologies is faced by considering both traditional and innovative approaches.
The teaching activities are aimed at the acquisition of both theoretical and practical knowledge for the technological design of buildings (and in particular of the building envelope). The students of the course will acquire effective skills to simulate the performance of building systems and sub-systems. Adequate design skills will be developed to design components in compliance with: environmental, energy, economic and social sustainability.
In particular, the course aims to provide students with:
- Consolidation of the basic concepts of conduction, convection and radiation, thermal comfort and use of bioclimatic diagrams for the choice of active and passive systems;
- Consolidation of the basic concepts concerning the performance of transparent and opaque building envelopes (structural, thermal protection, lighting, water tightness, air tightness, fire protection);
- Knowledge of the technological aspects related to the components design to ensure thermal protection of the building (Reflection, Resistance, Capacity);
- Knowledge of the technological aspects related to the components design to ensure Natural Lighting and Natural Ventilation;
- Basic knowledge of the technological aspects of prefabrication and wooden constructions;
-Knowledge of the latest generation of innovative technologies such as 3D printing applied to the building process.
At the end of the teaching activities and related exams, students will have developed:
- A critical understanding of the different technologies for building envelope (considering a variety of performance aspects);
- The ability to apply techniques for the performance design of components and systems of the building envelope;
- Mastery of the design process of simple building envelope components in every phase, from conception to the executive development and definition of detail;
- Mastery of the technological design of the building envelope, specifying a variety of performance aspects and quality.
