Students must pass the exams related to the indicated courses: Corso Integrato di Scienze Infermieristiche in area medica e chirurgica e il Corso Integrato di Scienze Infermieristiche in Medicina Specialistica e Integrata. In addition, knowledge of the gross and microscopic pathology and of the main principles of physiology is required.

Objectives

1) Knowledge of the correct protocols to collect biological samples
2) Knowledge of the methods of choosing the different technologies useful for pathological diagnoses
3) The achievement of the objectives 1 and 2 will allow the students to acquire capabilities necessary to effectively help patients affected by oncologic diseases in the course of the pathological diagnosis

At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize the complexity levels of the anatomical pathology (Histopathology, histochemistry, molecular biology, etc)
Applying knowledge and understanding
The student will be able to apply the knowledge learned during the course and to integrate it with the ones learned in previous studies. In addition, he will be able to address the issues related to the different diagnostic paths in anatomic pathology.

Contents

Knowledge of the pathologic basis of disease in different organs. Knowledge of cellular and tissue lesions and their evolution.
Knowledge of the role of pathology and cytology in clinical decisions. Recognition of the appropriateness of histochemical, immune-histochemical, and molecular biology techniques to perform differential diagnoses. Knowledge of the major classification systems. Knowledge of the main grading and staging schemes is needed in oncological pathology to interpret pathological reports correctly.

Extended Syllabus

The Pathology Department:
Histopathology, Surgical Pathology, Histochemistry and
Immunohistochemistry. The Pathology Department:
Cytology: conventional smears and thin prep preparations, cytology of effusions, fine needle aspiration.
The Pathology Department:
The usefulness of ultrastructural analyses in tumor pathology, molecular biology applied to cytological and histological specimens in tumor pathology
Cellular and tissue pathology: atrophy, hypertrophy, metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia, in situ carcinoma, invasive cancer characteristics, and nomenclature. Lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Breast cancer and importance of the sentinel lymph node Female genital apparatus: cervical cancer and tumors of the body of the uterus and prevention.
Non-neoplastic and neoplastic intestinal polyps, colon cancer.
Thyroid cancer and needle aspiration.
Skin tumors
Ovarian tumors, testis tumors

Teaching Methods

Interactive lectures (15 hours) performed utilizing images from Power Point files will be integrated by the students with the study of the teacher’s note and handouts and other educational training material.

The examination will involve an oral interview covering all aspects of the integrated course. To assess the interview, the following indicators and descriptors will be considered:

The module's final grade will be determined by calculating the average of all subject tests. In order to successfully pass the exam, you must obtain a minimum grade of 18 out of 30. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them logically and coherently.
