There are no prerequisites required neither in terms of propaedeutic elements nor in terms of knowledge nor particular skills to a successful learning of the teaching activities.

Objectives

According to the general training outcomes of the Five-year Degree Course in Architecture, the training course in Urban Planning 1 aims to provide students fundamentals of the discipline of Urban Planning, focusing on:
- the originating and structuring processes of the modern and contemporary cities;
- the propaedeutic techniques to design urban planning instruments;
- the categories to interpret and read the cities and their constituting parts.

Contents

Urban planning deals with physical transformations of the city and territory, considering the outcomes, the subjects involved, methods, techniques and tools which address them (Secchi 2000). The aim of the discipline is to define the organization of living conditions in the cities (Piccinato 1987), concerning about historical, cultural, and environmental context (Astengo 1966). Theories and essays, as well as rules and design used to investigate the Urban Planning, need to be related to the evidence of the city and urban elements as streets, squares, urban fabric and buildings, parks and gardens, etc.
Urban planning is a collective practice which produces physical changes. At the same time, it represents an ongoing know-how whose categories change relating to the plurality and instability of the city, considered as its case study. The city is conceived in its territorial, social, and environmental dimension (Gabellini 2018).
These initial assessments highlight the uncertain and plural feature of the Urban planning discipline, as well as its inner ethical and design tension (Tosi 2017).
According to this cultural framework, the Course in Urban planning 1 will be set by the professor Matteo di Venosa (ICAR/21 – 10 CFU).
The Course is structured into three didactic modules aimed to qualify a multilevel training process about the features which contribute to define the theoretical and applicative field of Urban planning.
The module 1 – Theories – is aimed to provide students with cognitive elements to analyze formation/transformation processes in modern and contemporary cities. This module includes insights on techniques and tools which define the implementation matrix of the urban plan and design (cf. Extended program).
The module 2 – Readings – moves students in the knowledge of the discipline of Urban Planning through the analysis of didactic materials (such as books, essays, videos, movies, etc.) considered to be significant for the training course of an architect-urbanist. In addition to contributing to the enrichment of “the small library of urban planning” (Bianchi 2001), the Readings enhance the skill to sharpen the gaze on the city and on transformation processes (cf. Extended program).
The module 3 – Notebook – concerns a practical exercise which promotes the interpretation of the existent city through the gaze and the direct observation. Students will be requested to cross their hometown to draw up their own travel notebook. The notebook will include maps, sketches, lectures, interpretations, and proposal ideas about the city (cf. Extended program).

Extended Syllabus

The Course is structured into three didactic modules aimed to qualify a multilevel training process about the features which contribute to define the theoretical and applicative field of Urban Planning.
The module 1 – Theories – is aimed to provide students with cognitive elements to analyze formation/transformation processes in modern and contemporary cities. This module includes insights on techniques and tools which define the implementation matrix of the urban plan and design.

10 – Urbanistica della transizione [Urban Planning in transition]

The module 2 moves students in the knowledge of the discipline of Urban Planning through shared readings and interpretations of didactic materials (especially books) considered to be significant for the training course of an architect-urbanist. The Readings will be referred to the following texts:

The module 3 – Notebook – concerns a practical exercise which promotes the interpretation of the existent city through the gaze and the direct observation. The notebook is organized in sections referred to some exercises of observation of the city, as follows:

Teaching Methods

The teaching course includes three interrelated didactic modules.
The first two modules (Theories and Readings) comprehend ex cathedra lessons (module 1) and lectures shared among teacher and students (module 2), about key topics in the discipline of Urban Planning.
Both of the modules are focused on the investigation and study of the formation/transformation processes of the modern and contemporary city, regarding to: socio-economic dynamics linked to the origin and the development of the cities of 20th century; the origins of the modern urban planning; city models; urban planning and design techniques and instruments; the significant actors who contributed to set-up the urban planning know-how.
The lessons will be held with through the use of digital presentations (powerpoint file) and checks during classes (through administration of tests) at the end of each lesson.
The lectures will take place in the classroom; the teacher will choose texts to share, discuss and deepen with the students.
The third module (Notebook) includes practical activities aimed to draw up a travel notebook about the hometown of each student. The exercise will be held in the classroom with the support of the teacher and tutors involved.
The Course in Urban Planning 1, led by prof. Matteo di Venosa, offers to the students a dedicated Microsoft Teams channel, useful to manage the lectures addressed to the students. The channel includes other online services such as: the archive of educational materials, ex-cathedra lessons, outcomes of class-exercises.
The teaching course may provide even a facebook group managed by tutors and students.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final evaluation of the Course is made by the weighted average of the evaluations acquired by the student during the oral examination and practical exercise.
The oral examination will concern the knowledge test about the reference texts of the course. The practical exercise will concern the presentation of the contents developed in the Notebook. The final assessment is given even relating to the attendance of the course and the learning progression of each student.

The Course in Urban Planning 1 will be held during the second college semester, from 20th February 2023 to 19th May 2023. The attendance to the Course is mandatory and is checked through students’ attendance signatures, periodically registered during the year.
