Objectives

The teaching is part of the general objective of the course of study and aims to provide the student with an overview of the evolutionary processes
of both the Western and global economies between the 18th and 21st centuries.
Particular attention will be devoted to the study of Italian economic development.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
The student/student at the end of the course should be able to:
-know the stages and dynamics of development in different historical periods and
geographical contexts;
-recognise the peculiarities in the historical periods considered and the protagonists of the
development;
-identify the policies adopted by governments in crisis contexts, using appropriate and relevant terminology.
-identify the fundamental stages in the evolution of the organisation of the labour factor.

SKILLS TO
APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course, the student will be able to recognise the dynamics of the historical development of national and world economic systems with particular reference to the evolution of work organisation.
He/she will be able to recognise the particularities of national economic development.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course the student will have acquired the following skills
communication skills:
-to be able to explain and discuss, also critically, the stages of the historical development of national and world economic systems.
-to recognise and explain the fundamental stages and evolutionary characteristics of work organisation.
-be able to address issues concerning Italian economic development.

Contents

The teaching of Economic History analyses the evolution
of economic development from the English industrial revolution to the changes of the present day.
In more detail, the following themes will be addressed:
-European and non-European historical-economic evolution (18th - 21st centuries);
- the Italian economy between the 19th and 20th centuries
-The organisation of work in industrial and commercial enterprises between the 19th century and the present day.

Extended Syllabus

Part 1

The first industrial revolution: stages and characteristics European economic development in the 19th century: a century of continuous growth. The European demographic revolution and the new demographic model. The transformation of the agricultural sector.
England and continental Europe. The second industrial revolution. The industrial and urban growth of the West. The European and non-European economy between war and reconstruction (1914-1929). The depression years (1929-1945). New balances of power (1945-1960). The expansion of consumption (1960-1973). World integration (1973-1989).

Part 2

The organisation of work: A new era. Sparkling candour. Bodies and machines. Male science, female labour. Organisation for the boom. Work and social change. The end of an era. Work does not end.

Economic problems in the age of the Historic Right. From moderate growth to crisis. The reorganisation of credit structures and the consolidation of public finance. Economic expansion in the Giolitti era; Great War and the first post-war period; Economics and economic policy in the Fascist era. From the African War to World War II. From reconstruction to the
economic miracle. Missed opportunities.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is divided into 48 hours of frontal teaching which will have
for
subject theoretical topics developed by the teacher. Attendance is optional, but recommended.

Verification of learning:

Type of exam: oral

Method of verifying learning

The verification of learning will be carried out through an oral test, consisting of questions aimed at verifying the knowledge of the topics under examination, as well as the ability to understand, autonomy of judgment and communication skills. The assessment will consider the appropriate use of language, the ability to make connections between different topics and the ability to interact critically on the topics proposed by the lecturer. The oral test will be assessed by a score expressed in thirtieths. A mark of 0 to 17 expresses an insufficient test, lacking the minimum elements in terms of knowledge of the discipline and the ability to identify the different historical periods, the economic events that occurred, their dynamics and the effects caused. For tests that are at least sufficient, the assessment will be broken down according to the achievement of each of the expected learning objectives and all the expected learning outcomes, according to the following scale: score of 18: sufficient; 19-22: more than sufficient; 23-26: good; 27-29: very good; 30: excellent. Honours is awarded when the examination, with the highest mark, consists of answers expressing an excellent level of independent judgement, communication skills and learning ability.
The assessment will be expressed in thirtieths.
Students may access the examination sessions after regular online registration.
