Knowledge of the main aspects:
1) textural and structural of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary
rocks,
2) classification and related main diagrams of igneous, metamorphic and
sedimentary rocks,
3) principles of physical useful and applied to optical microscopic analysis
of rocks,
4) main textural characteristics and main differences between the groups
of intrusive, volcanic, metamorphic and sedimentary igneous rocks.
At the end of the course, the student will have to be able to describe,
classify and differentiate the petrographic and textural characteristics
salient among the main groups of rocks. The student will be also able to
manage the basics of image analysis to quantify the textures of the rocks
through optical microscopy.
