The minimum required English knowledge to be consistent with the A2 language level, as indicated in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The course attendance is compulsory and considered as a prerequisite.
Obtained language certificates do NOT grant students exemption from the final exam.

Objectives

The course is aimed at students who have already acquired knowledge of English in line with the A1 descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Specific languages should not be considered as micro-languages, that is, reduced uses of the linguistic system, but as languages whose, production and reception identify the participants in the communication act as specialists. Therefore, students will pursue the understanding of texts in the relevant scientific field showing argumentative, expository and interlocutive skills in a lexically correct English. In fact, they will be able to interact with acquired communicative fluency and spontaneity with native speakers, as well as to read an articulate text on topics of medical-scientific interest. It will also be proposed to revise basic English grammar and to increase hospital-setting vocabulary.

The teaching of the English Language for the first year of the Bachelor’s Degree in CARDIOCIRCULATORY PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND CARDIOVASCULAR PERFUSION TECHNIQUES (QUALIFYING FOR THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION OF CARDIOCIRCULATORY PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND CARDIOVASCULAR PERFUSION SPECIALIST) focuses on the development of language skills, with particular attention to listening and reading comprehension and to oral production, in line with the A1 descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To this end, listening and reading activities, oral interaction and exercises aimed to develop and consolidate general grammatical and lexical competences (General English) will be proposed. At the same time, the teaching will provide students with basic specialised skills (ESP - English for Special Purposes) related to some of the main areas of the healthcare profession at issue (Medical-Hospital English), also through oral and written comprehension activities. A large part of the course will be devoted to the linguistic study of professional situations and of the hospital system as specialised textual genres.

PART 1
SCIENTIFIC ENGLISH - ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES (ESP)
Generally speaking, medical-scientific language is a formal/neutral language based on semantic rules that differ from ordinary natural language (General English) in terms of vocabulary, morphology, syntax and semantics as well as other linguistic features. Writing, drafting and interacting in the scientific field implies not only knowledge of a specific lexicography but also competence in its use (linguistic collocations) for an effective communication in the medical context. Students will acquire linguistic elements of the healthcare profession (e.g. terminology in the ward, communication with and colleagues, etc.) and of its many fields’ special terminologies, as generally listed below:
• English on the ward (operating theatre / room / suite)
Acronyms and abbreviations
Medical/hospital terminology
• Medical English
Human body and its systems
The heart and the cardiovascular system
Blood vessels
Circulation of the blood and physiology of the heart
The main cardiovascular diseases, diagnostic procedures and treatment

BASIC ENGLISH GRAMMAR
The grammar module provides students with a general review of the grammar and writing skills needed to be comfortable in academic and professional life. Learning how to use correctly the English grammar will help students feel comfortable in improving everyday, work-related interlocution. Some of the covered topics are listed below:

Teaching Methods

•In-class lectures supplemented by communicative and task-based activities that require the constant participation and interaction of the learners in order to develop the expected language skills. The use of teaching materials through computer and multimedia (AV) supports and of reference texts, such as specialised readings, is expected. Students will be required to bring their own teaching materials to class.

Verification of learning:

-Type of examination: ORAL
 • Assessment Method (grading system): the examination will be considered successfully passed if the student achieves the deemed QUALIFYING PROFICIENCY LEVEL.
 •Final Assessment: through single final QUALIFYING EXAMINATION.
