The course is also open to those who have never passed Romance Philology exams. At the beginning of the lessons the professor will provide basic skills to follow lessons successfully. Knowledge of Latin is not required.

Objectives

The course aims to make students able to translate and comment a text written in a medieval Romance language, taking data from a critical edition or from studies related to the tradition of the work. In a more general sense it provides an useful tool for learning medieval literature, history and study ancient language, which constitutes a significant increase in the cultural education and linguistic skills of students who wants to became teachers, translators of ancient literary texts or that are looking for a resarch career.

Dublin Descriptors

• Knowledge and understanding
Students will have to prove that they have acquired with the title of the three-year degree a set of knowledge that will allow them to elaborate personal and original ideas on issues of French and Spanish texts from the Middle Ages, identifying research problems both in linguistic and critical-literary field.
• Applying knowledge and understanding
Students must be aware of essential lines of ancient French and medieval Spanish historical grammar. They also will be able to apply philological method to narrative texts written in ancient French and medieval Spanish.
• Making judgements
Students must be able to formulate independent judgments fully documented on a scientific level, regardless of the indications of the teacher, also through the experience of an individual in-depth study of a subject covered in class.
• Communication skills
Students will be able to communicate in a clear and unambiguous manner their own assessments on the subject, showing full possession of the specialized language of the discipline.
• Learning skills
Students must be able to apply their knowledge to large and interdisciplinary contexts both in the history of language and in ancient French and medieval Spanish texts’ ecdotic.

Contents

The course offers an itinerary through the history of the Arthurian novel from Chrétien de Troyes to the later imitations of Castilian area, focused on the figure of Lancelot. In particular, the events since the beginng of the romance to the Charrete's episode will be analyzed in relation to subsequent versions in prose both French and Iberian. For each text will be examined handwritten tradition and reliability of existing critical editions. Works will be read in original language: in the first part of the course students will be provided with the basic elements of history of medieval French and Spanish necessary for ancient language's understanding. The course is divided into three parts dedicated to historical grammar, texts of French area and texts of Castilian area.

Teaching Methods

Lessons and exercises in order to:
- apply theory to practical examples (phonetic evolution)
- translate examined texts
- transcribe manuscripts' handwriting
- check reliability of a critical edition.
For Part I there is an optional written in itinere test. During practice hours, students will also be asked to exhibit individual tasks suggested by the professor.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Check of student preparation takes place:
- for Part I through the oral exam or the optional in itinere test
- for Parts II and III only through the oral exam.
- for individual work both during exercise hours and oral exam.
Evaluation is always expressed in thirtieths. Weighted average is applied on Part I (2CFU), II (2CFU), III (1CFU) and on the individual task (1CFU). The in itinere test on Part I is a questionnaire with open and closed questions; students will do it within 1h 30’ minutes: score will be divided according to the importance of the questions; if a student don't pass the test or do not accept its score, he will study Part I for the oral exam. In itinere test score is valid for all exam sessions of the current academic year. Assessment will cover only topics covered during the course, regardless of the planned program, which will be specified by the Professor at the end of the lessons. Professor's slides are intended as a tool for selecting topics within the bibliography. During oral exams there will be questions about theory and short written exercises in which the student will apply learned concepts; correct use of specific terminology, coherence and richness of the exhibition, as well as personal re-elaboration will also be assessed.
