Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of the chemistry of materials aimed at understanding the structure and properties of the different classes of materials.
At the end of the course, the student has acquired the basic knowledge of the main classes of materials, their properties and applications. They are also able to understand the principles underlying the design, development and manufacture of latest generation products of interest in the dental field.

Contents

Metallic materials: pure metals and metal alloys, elementary cells of metallic materials (body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, compact hexagonal),
solid solutions, binary state diagrams (two-component system miscible throughout the composition range), main metal alloys (ferrous and non-ferrous),
corrosion, applications

Ceramic materials (outline): definition, classification, crystalline and amorphous materials, structure, main advanced ceramics (zirconia and alumina), dental ceramic materials, applications

Elements of organic chemistry: hydrocarbons (saturated, unsaturated and aromatic), functional groups

Polymeric materials (outline): classification, structure (amorphous and semi-crystalline), main polymers (PE, PP, PVC, PTFE, PS.), applications.
Composite materials (outline): definition, classifications, structure

Extended Syllabus

State changes: Phase transitions. Balances between phases. State diagrams.
The liquid state: Main properties of liquids. The solid state: crystalline structures. Molecular, covalent, ionic solids. Metallic solids
Introduction to the chemistry of organic compounds. Hydrocarbons: general classification. Hydrocarbons (saturated, unsaturated and aromatic), functional groups nomenclature, graphic representation. Constitutional isomerism. Stereochemistry. Chirality, plane and center of symmetry. Chiral molecules. Definition of chiral center and stereogenic center.
The chemistry of the elements of interest in dental materials
Introduction to materials science and technology. Crystalline and amorphous structure of materials. Solidification and crystalline imperfections.
Thermally activated processes and diffusion in solids. State diagrams and metal alloys. Metallic materials and metallic alloys. Polymeric materials. Ceramic materials. Composite materials. Nanostructured materials

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures in the classroom (scheduled for 42 hours) and numerical exercises (scheduled for 6 hours).
Frontal lessons.
Teaching is mainly conventional, with oral presentation, supported by slide projections and writing on the blackboard. The teacher illustrates the relevance of the topics by giving concrete examples of their application in the context of applications to materials of interest in the dental field. The aim of the lectures is to convey the notions of theory relevant to the topics discussed.
Numerical exercises.
The exercises are carried out in parallel with the lectures, at the end of a cycle of lessons with coherent contents. The purposes of the exercises are:
- the practical application of the theoretical notions proposed (acquisition of practical skills)
- stimulate the ability to analyze and identify a strategy aimed at solving the problem (acquisition of processing skills).

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. The written exam consists of a multiple choice test of 6 questions including 3 theoretical questions and 3 exercises. The questions are intended to assess both the understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and materials science and the student's ability to apply what is described in theory to real cases. Numerical problems are instead aimed at verifying the student's ability to use the concepts acquired by carrying out numerical exercises. Those who pass the written exam with a mark of at least 18/30 are allowed to sit the oral exam in the same section.
The oral exam consists of a discussion lasting about 20 minutes in which questions will be asked relating to theoretical aspects related to the topics addressed in the teaching and reported in the detailed program of the course, and is aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding. achieved by the student on the theoretical and methodological contents indicated in the program. It will also make it possible to verify the student's communication skills with language properties and autonomous organization of the exposition of the topics, as well as verify the student's ability to apply the skills acquired to more complex systems, however, attributable to the teaching program.
The final mark of the exam will be expressed out of thirty and will take into account overall the evaluations obtained in the written and oral tests.
