Objectives

The aim of the course, which helps to reach the learning objectives of the undergraduate degree course in “Linguistic Mediation and Intercultural Communication”, is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the basics of discourse analysis, Global English and corpus linguistics. The topics covered in the language part provide a basis for translation and interpreting jobs in the private or public sectors, as well as to train students as linguistic and intercultural mediators in Government Ministeries.
The translation part aims at providing students with tools and methods for analysing and translating texts about tourism (tourism, art, cultural heritage, etc.) from English into Italian, and from Italian into English in order to highlight styles and communication strategies. A particular focus will be on determining the most appropriate translation strategies for the communication functions of the texts and on their lexical, terminological, pragmatic and stylistic features.

At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to describe and apply reading and writing strategies related to cohesion and coherence;
- acquired the skills to use different types of media languages;
- acquired the ability to create a corpus and describe the linguistic features in a corpus.

At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to connect theoretical and practical issues in discourse analysis;
- acquired the ability to explain the differences between varieties of English used in different media;
- acquired the ability to make judgments on corpus linguistics:
- acquired the ability to comment on different strategies to apply in translating tourist texts;
Communication skills
At the end of the course students will be able to:
-provide technincal and practical information about discourse analysis both to specialists and non-specialists;
- use English for the media;
- discuss the different features of a corpus.

Contents

The course aims at introducing students to the fundamentals of discourse analysis, defined as the analysis of language “beyond the sentence”. With their illuminating researches, Austin, Grice, Halliday and Leech have promoted the rapid development of discourse analysis concerned with language use in social contexts, and in particular with interaction or dialogue between speakers. The course will also focus on global English and the media by providing an insight on how the press, radio, advertising and especially television must have influenced the growth of world English.
Special attention will be paid to corpus linguistics seen as a resource for increasing the students’ competence and capacity, thereby developing reading and writing skills, providing communicative practice, increasing linguistic awareness, and developing learning autonomy.
The translation part aims to develop the linguistic, analytical and translation tools needed to address the translation of various types of texts in the field of tourist communication.
Different types of texts and different levels of difficulty will be presented to students to discuss the best translation strategies to apply to each individual case. The genre and the textual function will be examined, and each piece will be thoroughly analysed from a content and linguistic point of view in preparation for passive or active translation. Particular emphasis will be placed on tools, including technology, to support terminology research and stylistic analysis. Students will be also given some fundamental theoretical concepts to set the analysis of the preliminary text for translation

Extended Syllabus

The course aims at introducing students to the fundamentals of discourse analysis, defined as the analysis of language “beyond the sentence”. With their illuminating researches, Austin, Grice, Halliday and Leech have promoted the rapid development of discourse analysis concerned with language use in social contexts, and in particular with interaction or dialogue between speakers. The aspects of the context known as field, tenor and mode, as well as the notions of speech acts, and performative verbs will be closely investigated. The course will also focus on global English and the media by providing an insight on how the press, radio, advertising and especially television must have influenced the growth of world English.
According to David Crystal, English is the dominant language in world media and communications. For this reason, the language of the media (the press, advertising, broadcasting, cinema and the Web) will be examined in their linguistic and cultural peculiarities. Special attention will be devoted to corpus linguistics seen as a resource for increasing the students’ competence and capacity, developing reading and writing skills, providing communicative practice, increasing linguistic awareness, and developing learning autonomy. The process of compiling and analysing corpus data will be explained by introducing the most important existing English corpora.
The translation part aims to develop the linguistic, analytical and translation tools needed to address the translation of various types of texts in the field of tourist communication.

Teaching Methods

It is a 72-hour course, divided into two modules of 36 hours, of in-class instructor-led lectures arranged in 2-hour lessons held two/three times weekly. The course is devoted to teach discourse analysis, English for the media, corpus linguistics and translation of tourist texts from English into Italian and from Italian into English. Lessons, and seminars will be followed by activities and exercises aimed at developing writing skills (cohesion and coherence), English for the media and translating skills.
Course attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended and the written exam will be the same for both attending and non-attending students.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The course grade will be determined by aggregating the grade points obtained by the students in both the written and oral exams.
The language written exam is comprised of multiple-choice questions on discourse analysis, an exercise of cohesion and coherence and an exercise of text linguistics;
The translation written exam is comprised of two translations of tourist texts from English into Italian and from Italian into English.
Multiple- choice questions/exercises will deal with discourse analysis in order to get students reflect on the importance of register, cohesion and coherence in communication in private and public sectors.
By aggregating the three grades points obtained in the written exam (language part and 2 translations) with the oral exam’s grade point, the overall grade point average for the course can be determined.
Access to the oral exam is only possible once a student has passed all the individual components of the written exam (18/30). The student who has not passed one or more of the components of the written exam, will only repeat the failed part.
The final assessment will also take into account the didactic supporting activities conducted by native-speaking lectors throughout the academic year.
The oral exam, conducted in English, will test the knowledge and comprehension of discourse analysis, English for the media, and corpus linguistics.
In order to pass the exam, students must use specialised terminology and express him/herself in a coherent and clear way demonstrating logic skills that connect different aspects of discourse analysis, English for the Media and corpus linguistics.
The use of bilingual/monolingual dictionaries will be allowed.
