Prerequisites:

Students have acquired the reading and oral comprehension skills, as well as the writing and speaking skills of C1.1.
To sit the Spanish Language and Translation II exam, students must have passed the Spanish Language and Translation I exam.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should
- have adquired the reading and oral comprehension skills, as well as the writing and speaking skills of C1.2
- know and recognise the variants of American Spanish;
- be able to analyse different types of texts (written and oral)
- be able to apply the main translation strategies to sectoral texts with different levels of specialisation.

Contents

The course is split into tree modules:
Module 1: The module focuses on the variants of American Spanish.
Module 2: The module focuses on the notion of discourse (written and oral) and the analysis of text types.
Module 3: The module focuses on the translation between Italian and Spanish of different text types with different degrees of specialisation.

Extended Syllabus

In addition to covering the functional, grammatical and lexical content corresponding to the C1.2 of the Spanish language, the course deals with the following topics in Spanish linguistics and translation:
- Phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical variations of American Spanish
- Notion of speech in both written and oral variants
- Ways of organising speech
- The specialised text and its translation.

READINGS: For the oral exam, students are required to read 2 of the following books:

- La historia de mis dientes (Valeria Luiselli)
- Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego (Mariana Enríquez)
- Enterrar a los muertos (Ignacio Martínez de Pisón)

Teaching Methods

The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).
The classes offered by the instructor(s) include both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).
The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.
For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The examination will be written and oral.
The written examination will be divided into two parts:
- The first one will consist of a test relating to the theoretical part of the course.
- The second one will consist of a translation from Spanish into Italian of a sectoral text similar to those translated during the course.

For the oral examination, students will have to demonstrate:
- that they know the main characteristics of American Spanish,
- that they know the main characteristics of discourse and textual types, also in relation to translation.
- They are able to talk on two 2 books of their choice from the following::
BEFORE sitting the final exam, all students are warmly invited to take the language proficiency test for level C1.2 (second year lectorship) offered by the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (the lector for this level is Silvia Cañas). For any information regarding the lector’s classes and tests, you should contact the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (information and contacts are available on the website cla.unich.it).
In order to take the oral examination you must have passed the Lector's examination
Passing the test is a prerequisite for accessing the rest of the exam.

SYLLABUS VALIDITY
The syllabus is valid for the whole 2021/2022 academic year (until the exam session of January/February 20223). For the final grade to be officially registered, students must have successfully completed all the parts of the exam by the last session of the 2021-2022 academic year.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The syllabus is the same for all students, whether attending or not: non-attending students will autonomously revise and practice the contents and the oral and written skills included in the coursebook, possibly integrating it with the additional recommended reference material.

LECTOR SESSIONS
The language skills of C1.2 are developed and practiced during the practical sessions with the lector(s). Attendance of these sessions is therefore essential in order to reach the target language level and for oral and written exam preparation.
