Objectives

In the context of the formative objectives of the Corso di Studi magistrale di Beni Archeologici e Storico-Artistici, the aim is to contribute in the various aspects of
Knowledge and understanding: to develop a thorough knowledge of the phenomena of rebellion and revolution in different contexts to establish connections between political, religious, economic, social, cultural history; to examine the various historiographic currents on the above themes; to activate the use to different sources (biographies, normative texts, correspondence)
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: to develop the application of knowledge in an overall way, with the critical analysis of events contextualizing them in the context of complex and multidisciplinary themes and giving them an accomplished organization through individual work on texts to be discussed in seminars in class
Autonomy of judgment: fostering a critical and autonomous analytical approach to sources and texts related to the course topic
Communication skills: develop ownership of specific language for oral and written communication of acquired knowledge and skills
Learning skills: preparation for the achievement of the ability to independently develop a method of study and historiographical analysis suitable for higher education (PhD) and access to training courses for teaching in school

Contents

The course aims to follow the numerous cases of reaction of social groups against established authority, highlighting the different typologies defined by the various terms (riots, rebellions, revolts, revolutions) over the centuries from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the contemporary age. We will examine little episodes as well as great events, rural and urban, unsuccessful or successful, in which rights were claimed, authority was overthrown, and political independence achieved. The underlying motivations (religious, social, economic, political) and their overlaps will be highlighted, as well as the positioning of the different classes on these occasions with particular attention to the comparison between the various cases by analyzing the historiography on the subject.

Extended Syllabus

A first series of lessons will be dedicated to the definition of the typologies of riot, uprising, rebellion, revolt, revolution. After a rapid examination of the phenomena in the medieval age, the main part of the course will be devoted to the single cases occurred during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, culminating in the age of revolutions at the turn of the XIX century.Finally, after the historical analysis of the single case studies, the course will conclude by dwelling on the abundant historiography of the uprisings and revolutions, which has given rise to controversial interpretations and to real historiographic debates, also linked to different ideological visions and to the changing sensitivity of historians in the long run.

Recommended Bibliography

Preparation for the examination is to be carried out on THREE books, ONE of which is chosen from group A (general texts) and TWO from group B (monographs). Other texts will be indicated during the seminar course. For students regularly attending the course, it is possible to write a paper on a text (chosen from a list proposed by the professor and possibly accompanied by other bibliography) and then present it orally in class and prepare only TWO texts for the exam. Students not attending the course must always agree on the programme with the professor by contacting him by e-mail (giovanni.pizzorusso@unich.it).

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists of an oral examination on the contents of the course. The knowledge of the course contents and bibliography, the quality of the oral expression, the critical and methodological skills will be evaluated. For those who have opted for the writing and presentation of the "paper", the same will be included in the evaluation. The score ranges from 1 to 30 with honors, according to the following: 1-17 insufficient, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honors excellent

The course takes place in the second semester. For the purposes of exam preparation, knowledge of the topics covered in the course lectures is also very useful. The use of a good geographical or historical-geographical atlas is recommended for an exact localization of the events. Materials of subsidy may be provided during the course. For the attending students only (i.e. students who have followed the course continuously and not occasionally), it is expected the writing and presentation of a thesis on a monographic volume (the list will be provided during the course) that allows you to take the exam only one of the two volumes of your choice.
