Objectives

The specific training objectives of General Surgery are: the understanding of the aspects of surgical anatomy, of physical and instrumental semeiotics and of the general elements of surgical therapy as well as of the etiopathogenesis, physiopathology, symptomatology, diagnosis and therapy of surgically pertinent diseases.
To make known the general principles for carrying out a medical examination and to apply the methodologies and techniques of collection of the anamnesis, of the physical examination, of the instrumental tests to formulate a differential diagnosis. Identification, evaluation and management of surgical emergencies.
Make the student acquire the right mentality to follow a procedural method suitable for dealing with the various clinical situations, providing the main notions for surgical therapies relating to the most frequently encountered pathologies. Finally, knowing how to communicate adequately with the patient, family members and colleagues.

Contents

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of the most common diseases encountered in clinical practice involved in surgical procedures in the patient of dental interest.
Students will have to acquire a clinical preparation to recognize and treat diseases of surgical interest. In particular, on the basis of the notions of pathophysiology of organs, systems and elements of clinical semiotics, students will be educated in a diagnostic methodology, also instrumental, aimed at recognizing specific diseases or functional alterations.
Furthermore, notions of differential diagnostics and surgical indication criteria will be provided.
The program consists of two parts: a general one and a special one. The first includes surgical topics not related to organ pathologies; the second part examines the main clinical syndromes related to organic pathologies of surgical interest.

GENERAL PART
• Infections in surgery: circumscribed, generalised
•Injuries from traumatic agents.
• Wound healing process.
•Burns and burn disease.
• Body reactions to trauma.
•Shock : hypovolemic, septic and cardiogenic.
• Hydroelectrolyte and acid-base alterations of surgical interest.
• Surgery: metabolic changes, changes in renal, hepatic and respiratory function; operative risk assessment.
• Artificial nutrition: enteral, peripheral and central parenteral.
• Tumors: general information, classification, methods of diffusion, staging.
•Transplants: general information; notions on organ transplants: skin, kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, lungs, multiviscerals.

•Pathology of the esophagus and the esophagogastric junction.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methods followed by the teachers consist of traditional lessons and discussion of clinical cases. The lessons will take place through Power Point presentations and films. During the lessons the specific problems of the pathology covered by the frontal lesson will be illustrated and discussed.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The verification of learning will be carried out through an exam consisting of an oral test on the topics presented in the program in order to verify if the student has achieved the set objectives, assessing his exposure skills and the completeness of the discussion of the topics covered by the interview.

Contacts/More Information

Attendance at lessons respects the schedule scheduled at the beginning of the academic year, with attendance compulsory for at least 70% of lessons, attendance signatures will be released at the end of the course. The recovery methods for students who have at least 50% attendance at class are agreed from time to time with the teacher.
