Summary of Programme

Module I (= 6 ECTS) Troilo Malvezzi, Opusculum comicum.
Reading of and comment on the Opusculum comicum, written by the Bolognese jurist Troilo Malvezzi and preserved in the codex Magliabechiano VII 1165 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence. The pièce, dedicated to Poggio Bracciolini, recalls - as far as the plot, the structure and the language are concerned - the atmosphere and the modus scribendi of Plautus and Terence: the play is divided into five acts and the action is centred upon the vicissitudines of two young lovers, Claudius and Lavinia, and the machinationes of the servant Furvus, the real limelight-stealer of the comedy.

Module II (= 3 ECTS) Tommaso de Mezzo, Epirota. Reading of and comment on the Epirota by Tommaso de Mezzo. The text opens the series of comedies written in Venice in the second half of the 1400s. Despite references to contemporary events and suggestions offered by the comic tradition of its time, the Epirota shows in its plot and structure great adherence to the models of Plautus and Terence and moves away from those characteristics strictly tied to the Medieval culture common in earlier humanistic theatre.
