Objectives

MODULE 1.
Knowledge of the main aspects and the related chronology of the Middle Ages, with particular reference to subjects with institutional relevance for the European and, above all, the Italian history. The frontal lessons aim to allow a profitable understanding of the textbooks recommended for the exam and to facilitate a deeper understanding of institutional topics.
MODULE 2. Suitable for the three years degrees students acquaintance with the ability to orient oneself on the research methods concerning the medieval sources and the medieval history.

Contents

MODULE 1 (6 cfu). Medieval history prominent topics.
MODULE 2 (3 cfu). Suitable introduction for the three years degrees students to research methods and bibliographical instruments related to the medieval history.

Extended Syllabus

MODULE 1. Introduction to the Middle Ages and medieval historiography; civil, canon and common law in medieval history; the monarchies, the emperor, the pope and the papacy; fief and “feudalism”; heresy; monasticism and religious orders. Other subjects of particular importance: the Reform of the Church, the Investitures (11th-12th century). The Kingdom of Sicily and the "Patrimonium beati Petri"; the “Marsia”. During the lectures reading and commenting historiographical text and legal sources is scheduled.
MODULE 2. Introduction to sanctity, papacy and religious orders in the Middle Ages; reading and analysis of papal letters and legislative sources concerning the attempted canonization of Ambrogio da Massa.

Frontal lessons with slides in order to improve learning.

Verification of learning:

Oral examination to scrutiny regarding correct exposition and right understanding about the topics dealt during the course.

Frontal lessons will take place intensively for six hours a week; any absence of the lecturer due to cultural and academic commitments will be communicated in advance to students. Non-attending students are warmly recommended to contact the professor personally and not only by e-mail.
