Module 1: “Exploring English Language: Approaches to History and Patterns” (6 CFU) – Prof. Marco Olivieri

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic tools in order to analyse the English language. Starting from different perspectives, the course will focus on some linguistic patterns determining textual meaning. Particular emphasis will be given to the analysis of the following aspects: word classes, morphology, phonetics and phonology, techniques of word-formation, history of the English language, ecological and environmental issues.

Module 2: “Exploring Language and Culture” (6 CFU) - Prof.ssa Maria Cristina Seccia

In this course, students will examine the main syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic aspects of the English language, thus being able to analyse critically different types of authentic texts from a linguistic and cultural perspective. The analysis will be focused in particular on sentence structure, on the linguistic meaning of words, phrases and sentences, and on the role played by the communicative situation as well as the social context in which English is used.
