Basic general linguistics knowledge.
The course will offer an overview of the linguistic history of Semitic languages with a focus on the Arabic-speaking area.
The course will offer the basic elements for the historical understanding of Arabic in its Semitic context.
Topics of the course will include: 1) the Afro-Asiatic language family. 2) Semitic languages. 3) The evolution of Semitic writing systems. 4) Oldest documents of Arabic and their writing systems. 5) Transcription and transliteration of Arabic and other Semitic writing systems. 6) Evolution and diffusion of Arabic.
1) Ahmad al-Jallad, "A Manual of the Historical Grammar of Arabic", 2020. To study to p. 1-35, the rest as supplementary reading. 2) Teaching materials provided by the theacher.
Teaching will actively involve students through flipped classes, open discussion, and roleplaying.
Exam will be an oral interview on the topics discussed in the course. Evaluation may take into account agreed upon activities done during classes.
Additional material will be provided during the course. Students who do not study Arabic will have to familiarize with its writing system and basic grammar.
