The course is intended for the students of the ancient curriculum of the Master's Degree in Philology, Linguistics and Literary Traditions, which want to deepen the scientific study of Latin in its various aspects. In order to take the exam it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the Latin language and literature and have already supported at least 6 credits in Latin literature during the three-year or specialized degree.
Like the students of the master's degree program, those who take the exam to obtain teaching credits must demonstrate the same skills in the language and in Latin literature.

Objectives

The students are able to analyze the structure of the Latin texts (grammar and rhetoric) and to translate them.The student will know how to set up an original critical discourse on a text, confronting himself with the previous readings and interpretations and applying
the most up-to-date methodologies.

Contents

Expressive reading: diction and gestures at the grammarian and rhetorical schools

Extended Syllabus

After some lessons that will introduce to the study of Latin grammar by specifying the objects, objectives and methods of ancient teaching also in relation to the current definition of grammatical science, the course will focus on the expressive reading (voice and gestures).

The course consists of 36 h of frontal teaching and 6 h of seminars on individual topics

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of a written and oral exam on the entire syllabus.
The written exam involves the translation of a piece analyzed in class along with some open-ended questions on issues of morphology and syntax. The oral test, which will be supported by those who have achieved a score of at least 18/30 in the written test, consists of an interview on course-related topics and metric reading of a text. The tests aim to value the knowledge of the contents and bibliography provided for by the course, the quality of the written and oral expression, the critical and methodological skills and the achievement of the intended objectives will be evaluated. The score ranges from 1 to 30 with honors, according to the following: <18 = seriously lacking knowledge; 18-21: essential knowledge; 22-24: documented knowledge; 25-27 extensive knowledge; 28-30: in-depth knowledge; 30 with honors: in-depth knowledge, supported by critical re-elaboration.
