Objectives

The course is meant to contribute to reaching the learning objectives of the MA programme in "Philology, Linguistics and Literary Traditions". More specifically, it aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of Mediaeval and Humanistic Latin.

- Expected learning results:
1) knowledge of the course subjects;
2) ability to critically discuss specific case-studies;
3) communication skills.

Contents

The course will focus on the study of Mediaeval and Humanistic Latin from historico-cultural perspective; in particular, we'll be concerned with the main linguistic features of medieval Latin as opposed to classical Latin. The first biography of Francesco Petrarca, 'De vita et moribus Francisci Petracchi', written by Giovanni Boccaccio will be analyzed and commented on, in order to explore the linguistic peculiarities of this language.

Extended Syllabus

The course is divided into two parts.

- Part I: will illustrate the main linguistic features of Mediaeval and Humanistic Latin (6th-16th centuries).
- Part II: analysis of 'De vita et moribus Francisci Petracchi' written by Giovanni Boccaccio; students will be encouraged to take an active part in the lessons.

The course consists of lectures (42 hours). Students will be tested to assess their learning.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
