Prerequisites:

Students who have not taken the Medieval History exam in the three-year degree course must study at least the following volume:
- R. PACIOCCO, Medioevo. Un sussidio per temi e concetti, Torino, Accademia University Press (free ebook downloadable from various websites, eg: www.academia.edu; www.amazon.it; www.aaccademia.it).
Consultation of one of the following three manuals is highly recommended:
- G. VITOLO, Medioevo. I caratteri originali di un’età di transizione, Firenze, Sansoni.
- A. CORTONESI, Il Medioevo. Profilo di un millennio, Roma, Carocci.
- A. ZORZI, Manuale di storia medievale, Torino UTET.

Objectives

An example of historical reasoning skills to promote students’ acquaintance with the research methods concerning the medieval sources and the medieval history, with special reference to the history of papacy and the mendicant orders.

Contents

Papal privileges and religious orders: the case of the Friars Minor.

Extended Syllabus

Introduction to the relationship between the papacy and religious orders in the 12th and 13th centuries. Analysis of the role of papal privileges in the history of the Franciscan Order starting from the beginning of the 13th century up to the first half of the 14th, based on a manuscript (cod. 49) preserved in the Biblioteca Apostolica Antoniana di Padova. During the lessons the direct reading of the main sources will be carried out.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons with slides in order to improve learning.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Oral examination to scrutiny regarding correct exposition and right understanding about the topics dealt during the course. Exam assessments are graded out of thirty.

Frontal lessons will take place intensively for six hours a week; any absence of the lecturer due to cultural and academic commitments will be communicated in advance to students. Non-attending students are warmly recommended to contact the professor personally and not only by e-mail.
