The continuous and rapid evolution of the ways of contemporary living spaces presupposes the setting up of private and public spaces for continuously renewed activities concerning the home, work, places of consumption, means of transport etc. The changed conditions of markets and production require that spaces not only meet performance requirements, but also possess a high symbolic, expressive and communicative content. An interior is a complex set of elements (spaces, furnishings, lights, colors, sounds) that determine the qualitative level of the relationship between individuals and space itself. Therefore, Design means to assume the envelope as a starting point for working inside it, operating not only on set-up and furnishing systems, but also on the whole range of intangible components (light, color, comfort conditions, etc.).
Educational goals
The course aims to direct students to a critical knowledge of project methodologies, experimental verification techniques (with particular reference to the use of real-world simulation tools) and to solicit, through targeted exercises, the acquisition of the elementary skills to support the design of the environments, so as to be able to govern the different phases of the project with the necessary balance between research, study and application testing activities.
The course includes a first phase of lectures to offer a global overview of the general issues of interior design and a second phase of design exercise aimed at providing students with a syntax that does not include the placement of spaces in a given context.
The theoretical subject will be treated with the support of historical references and exemplifying notions, while the design exercise will be referred to specific application areas and will have as its object the preparation of simple living spaces.
In the first part of the work the students will complete short researches concerning design solutions of spatial typologies related to the assigned theme. Such research will be aimed at constructing a critical-analytical framework in preparation for the application exercise. In the second part they will develop a project which will have to check and simulate, through drawings and physical models, the degree of formal and functional congruence with respect to the objectives pursued. The final works will have to represent, in an appropriately organized way, both the material collected during the research and the one produced during the exercises.

Teaching methods
The course is organized in:
- lectures offered by the teacher (lectures / presentations);
- seminars with national and international guests (monographic / seminar lectures);
- group design experience with ongoing evaluations;
- collective reviews and timely meetings (presentations and choral discussions / direct reviews);
collaborations with external structures.
Evaluation methods
Type of exam:
Oral
Verification of learning methods:
The course includes:
- ongoing evaluation of pre-project research (individual);
- ongoing evaluation of the design exercise (individual);
- ongoing evaluation of the workshop (individual);
The final exam will be aimed at ascertaining the knowledge of the topics covered during the course (listed in the calendar of educational activities) and evaluating the ability to discuss with a critical approach the project work carried out in the exercises.
