Objectives

The course aims to direct students to a critical knowledge of project methodologies, experimental verification techniques (with particular reference to the use of real-life simulation tools) and to solicit, through targeted exercises, the acquisition elementary skills to support the design of environments, so as to be able to govern the different phases of the project with the necessary balance between research, study and application testing activities.
The continuous and rapid evolution of the ways of contemporary living presupposes the preparation of private and public spaces for continuously renewed activities that concern the home, work, places of consumption, means of transport etc. The changed conditions of markets and production require that spaces not only meet performance requirements, but also possess a high symbolic, expressive and communicative content. An interior is a complex set of elements (spaces, furnishings, lights, colors, sounds) that determine the qualitative level of the relationship between individuals and the space itself. Therefore, designing means assuming the envelope as a starting point for working inside it, operating not only on set-up and furnishing systems, but also on the whole range of intangible components (light, color, comfort conditions, etc.). ).
The course includes a first phase of lectures to offer a global framework of the general problems of interior design and a second phase of design exercise aimed at providing students with a syntax that is independent of the placement of spaces in a given context.
The theoretical subject will be treated with the support of historical references and illustrative notions, while the design exercise will refer to specific application areas and will have as object the preparation of simple living spaces.
In the first part of the work the students will carry out short researches concerning design solutions of spatial types related to the assigned topic. This research will be aimed at building a critical-analytical framework preparatory to the application exercise. In the second part they will develop a project for which they will have to check and simulate, through drawings and physical models, the degree of formal and functional congruency with respect to the objectives pursued. The final papers must represent, in a properly organized manner, both the material collected during the research and the material produced during the exercises.
