The course includes two ongoing exercises at the end of the first and second part of the lessons:
FIRST EXERCISE
Workshop "Thinking about matter"
- practical experience of classification of the expressive / sensory characteristics of materials
SECOND EXERCISE
Workshop "from object to material"
- identification and breakdown of the parts of the object, materials and production processes referring to the individual parts.

FIRST PART
01_ Materials in Design, new features and aesthetic qualities.
02_ Historical evolution of materials: stone, wood, metals, glass, ceramics, plastics.
03_ The "sensory" experience in the Bauhaus: the Itten school.
04_ The "sense" of materials for Design, sensory experiences and emotional conditioning of meaning.
05_ The project of emotion. The symbolic, association and affective value. The personality of the materials.
SECOND PART
06_ Matter and Material. Material, technology and shape: finishing, joining, forming processes. Semi-finished products and components.
07_ The properties of materials. Performances and characteristics: Physical, mechanical and technological chemistry.
08_ Classifying materials: the problem of over-choice and the tools for selecting materials.
09_ Innovative materials. Materials "custom-made ".
10_The polymers. Families, additives, polyaddition, polycondensation, polymerization.
11_Production processes of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
12_ Composite materials: matrices and reinforcements, characteristics and production defects, collapse.
13_ The production processes of composite materials, optimization of individual components.
