Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with a basic training and culture on the language of materials in the different applications of design. Starting from the history of materials (from traditional to more recent ones), both the main technical, mechanical and productive properties, as well as the perceptual-sensorial and symbolic-communicative qualities, are described to address the complex issue of conscious design choice, through new selection criteria and innovative online research tools.

Specifically, starting from basic knowledge and the evolution of more traditional materials and processes, the concept of "designed material" and possible innovative application scenarios will be analyzed. At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize both the technical and perceptive-sensorial properties of materials, and the most advanced technologies and production processes, with a particular sensitivity related to the research themes of new materials for design products. Furthermore, he will be able to carry out a research on materials for design by consulting the material libraries.

Contents

The course contributes to the training of the student of the Degree in Design through the knowledge of materials, technologies and their applications in the various sectors of the industrial products. In particular, the first part of the course investigates the expressive / sensorial characteristics of materials, with an in-depth study of the possible scenarios for the use of new materials for design and of classifications and multisensoriality; the second part of the course, through a technological approach, is focused on the characteristics of different classes of materials (woods, metals, plastics, composites, glass, ceramics), on processing techniques, on production processes and advanced technologies, with specific attention to recent developments in the most advanced research sectors referred to polymers and composite materials for product innovation.

Extended Syllabus

The course includes two ongoing exercises at the end of the first and second part of the lessons:
FIRST EXERCISE
Workshop "Thinking about matter"
- practical experience of classification of the expressive / sensory characteristics of materials
SECOND EXERCISE
Workshop "from object to material"
- identification and breakdown of the parts of the object, materials and production processes referring to the individual parts.
The specific contents of the lessons of the Materials for Design course are:
FIRST PART
01_ Materials in Design, new features and aesthetic qualities.
02_ Historical evolution of materials: stone, wood, metals, glass, ceramics, plastics.
03_ The "sensory" experience in the Bauhaus: the Itten school.
04_ The "sense" of materials for Design, sensory experiences and emotional conditioning of meaning.
05_ The project of emotion. The symbolic, association and affective value. The personality of the materials.

SECOND PART
06_ Matter and Material. Material, technology and shape: finishing, joining, forming processes. Semi-finished products and components.
07_ The properties of materials. Performances and characteristics: Physical, mechanical and technological chemistry.
08_ Classifying materials: the problem of over-choice and the tools for selecting materials.
09_ Innovative materials. Materials "custom-made ".
10_The polymers. Families, additives, polyaddition, polycondensation, polymerization.
11_Production processes of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
12_ Composite materials: matrices and reinforcements, characteristics and production defects, collapse.
13_ The production processes of composite materials, optimization of individual components.

Teaching Methods

The course is organized with ex cathedra lessons, ongoing individual exercises and group discussions on the exercises carried out.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The course includes several mandatory moments of verification and final evaluation:
• two ongoing group exercises
• an individual questionnaire on the topics covered
• final exam, with critical discussion of the results achieved.
The evaluations of the ongoing exercises and the questionnaire contribute in a weighted way to the average for the final evaluation of the exam. In particular, the first exercise has a weight equal to 20%, the second exercise to 30%, the questionnaire to 50%. The exam is individual and consists of a critical discussion of the topics covered, also taking into account the results achieved by the ongoing assessments and the questionnaire.
