Objectives

Among the objectives of the course are those of providing the fundamental notions of the theory and history of restoration (with hints at the various philosophical positions that have directed the process), as well as on the current orientations of the discipline and their relationship with contemporary culture; provide information on current historical-critical investigation tools aimed at understanding architecture, the construction and transformation process, as well as urban and territorial contexts; provide skills for the identification of degradation phenomena and the tools for defining the conservation intervention.

Contents

The course is aimed at transmitting the theoretical and methodological contents for the understanding of the aims and areas of the restoration intervention, in the peculiar theoretical reasons, in the theoretical and historical foundations and in the methodological issues.
The different ways of intervention carried out in the various eras will be studied in depth and, together with the fundamental history-restoration nexus, the elements that contribute to defining the framework of current conservation practice will be described; also analyzing, for exemplary cases, each critical orientation. A broad analytical-diagnostic panorama will also be outlined regarding the 'matter' and the operating methods of restoration, investigating the intervention techniques and innovative developments.

Extended Syllabus

1. General problems: definitions and basic terminology.
2. The discipline of Restoration: Theory-Theories; History of the restoration; current guidelines; Beyond the restoration.
3. The theoretical foundation of restoration, the most recent method proposals (plurality and trends).
4. The 'direct reading' of the historical building and the comparison with the literary sources.
5. The restoration project respecting the authenticity of the monument: theoretical questions and technical choices.
6. Methods of 'direct' and instrumental survey of historical architecture and techniques of representation of the restoration project.
7. Chemical-physical investigation techniques for the study of architectural materials and the control of intervention methodologies.
8. Analysis and interpretation of the forms of degradation of architectural materials: causes and processes. Drafting of thematic tables (legislation and lexicon).
9. Restoration and conservation of natural and artificial stone materials: pre-consolidation, cleaning, consolidation and protection.
10. Restoration and context. Restoration on an urban scale.
11. Archaeology, restoration, museography.

Teaching Methods

In order to ensure adequate skills in understanding and evaluating the historical building and its context, the course is divided into both theoretical and more properly technical lessons, during which the various topics will be illustrated also through case studies.
