Prerequisites:

A basic knowledge of the geography of Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean is required. Quite useful (yet not mandatory) the knowledge of ancient languages, Latin and Greek.

Objectives

Basic knowledge of the chronology and political institutions of Roman History, including the spread of Roman citizenship, the economic evolution of Roman society and its connection with military expansionism, the making of a Mediterranean empire and its deconstruction in Late Antiquity.

This class contributes to the achievement of the learning objectives of the Bachelor Degree in Beni Culturali, aiming at providing primary hermeneutical and technical tools (analysing sources, collecting and interpreting data and their context, communicating research outputs). The Bachelor Degree aims at training agents in Cultural Heritage who are skilled in Archaeology and Art History, both for theoretical knowledge as for practical know how in conservating and enhancing cultural heritage.

Contents

MODULE 1: HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONS OF ANCIENT ROME.
Credits: 6 CFU / 42 hours of class lectures.
Title: "The history of ancient Rome from its origins to Heraclius, between civilitas and barbaritas".
This module concerns more than fifteen centuries (8th cent. BC – 7th cent. AD) of Roman History, from Rome’s origins (legend of Trojan War, dynasty of Alba Longa, Rome’s foundation by Romulus, 753 BC) to the river Yarmuk’s battle between the Eastern Roman Emperor Heraclius and the Islamic commander Khalid ibn al-Walid (636 AD).
The lectures will focus on the processes of contrast, interaction and integration between the Roman citizens (cives Romani) and the foreigners, non-citizens (peregrini), and between the inhabitants of the Roman Empire (civilitas) and the external “barbarians” (barbaritas).

MODULE 2: INTRODUCTON TO LATIN EPIGRAPHY.
Credits: +3 CFU / 21 hours of class lectures, tot. 9 CFU.
Title: "Epigrafia Latina: introduzione a una disciplina storica".
This module offers a methodological introduction to Latin Epigraphy, a historical science related to Roman History. Latin inscriptions of different kinds and chronology will be analysed and discussed.

Extended Syllabus

Module 1 (6 CFU) will focus on the processes of contrast, interaction and integration between the Roman citizens (cives Romani) and the foreigners, non-citizens (peregrini), and between the inhabitants of the Roman Empire (civilitas) and the external “barbarians” (barbaritas). Ancient sources of different kinds will be analysed and discussed: literary, epigraphic, papyrological, numismatic, iconographic, archaeological sources.

Module 2 (+3 CFU, tot. 9 CFU) offers a methodological introduction to Latin Epigraphy (that is the study of Latin inscriptions), such as a historical science related to Roman History, quite useful for studies in social, religious, and administrative history. Latin inscriptions of different kinds (funerary, honorary, sacred, public inscriptions etc.) and chronology (from archaic age to Late Antiquity), coming from Rome and Roman Italy, will be analysed and discussed.

63 hours (42 + 21 hours) of class lectures; conferences and seminars will be organized throughout the semester. It is recommended that students regularly attend lesson.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of a written test and an oral exam on the entire syllabus (texts, lessons, sources, teaching materials). The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
At the oral exam students are necessarily requested to bring all the texts and teaching documents, otherwise they will not be allowed to conclude their exam.
